Book Short Summary:

Most evangelical Christians believe that those people who are not saved before they die will be punished in hell forever. But is this what the Bible truly teaches? Do Christians need to rethink their understanding of hell? In the late twentieth century, a growing number of evangelical theologians, biblical scholars, and philosophers began to reject the traditional doctrine of eternal conscious torment in hell in favor of a minority theological perspective called conditional immortality. This view contends that the unsaved are resurrected to face divine judgment, just as Christians have always believed, but due to the fact that immortality is only given to those who are in Christ, the unsaved do not exist forever in hell. Instead, they face the punishment of the "second death"--an end to their conscious existence. This volume brings together excerpts from a variety of well-respected evangelical thinkers, including John Stott, John Wenham, and E. Earl Ellis, as they articulate the biblical, theological, and philosophical arguments for conditionalism. These readings will give thoughtful Christians strong evidence that there are indeed compelling reasons for rethinking hell.

Book Short Summary:

On the eve of St. Medard's Day in the year 1281, the moon, which had just risen, was shining brightly upon the imperial free city of Nuremberg; its rays found their way into the street leading from the strong Marienthurm to the Frauenthor, but entrance to the Ortlieb mansion was barred by a house, a watchtower, and—most successfully of all—by a tall linden tree. Yet there was something to be seen here which even now, when Nuremberg sheltered the Emperor Rudolph and so many secular and ecclesiastical princes, counts, and knights, awakened Luna's curiosity. True, this something had naught in common with the brilliant spectacles of which there was no lack during this month of June; on the contrary, it was very quiet here. An imperial command prohibited the soldiery from moving about the city at night, and the Frauenthor, through which during the day plenty of people and cattle passed in and out had been closed long before. Very few of the worthy burghers—who went to bed betimes and rose so early that they rarely had leisure to enjoy the moonlight long—passed here at this hour. The last one, an honest master weaver, had moved with a very crooked gait. As he saw the moon double—like everything else around and above him—he had wondered whether the man up there had a wife. He expected no very pleasant reception from his own at home. The watchman, who—the moon did not exactly know why—lingered a short time in front of the Ortlieb mansion, followed the burgher. Then came a priest who, with the sacristan and several lantern bearers, was carrying the sacrament to a dying man in St. Clarengasse. There was usually more to be seen at this hour on the other side of the city—the northwestern quarter—where the fortress rose on its hill, dominating the Thiergartenthor at its foot; for the Emperor Rudolph occupied the castle, and his brother-in-law, Burgrave Friedrich von Zollern, his own residence. This evening, however, there was little movement even there; the Emperor and his court, the Burgrave and his train, with all the secular and ecclesiastical princes, counts, and knights, had gone to the Town Hall with their ladies. High revel was held there, and inspiring music echoed through the open windows of the spacious apartment, where the Emperor Rudolph also remained during the ball. Here the moonbeams might have been reflected from glittering steel or the gold, silver, and gems adorning helmets, diadems, and gala robes; or they might surely have found an opportunity to sparkle on the ripples of the Pegnitz River, which divided the city into halves; but the heavenly wanderer, from the earliest times, has preferred leafy hidden nooks to scenes of noisy gaiety, a dim light to a brilliant glare. Luna likes best to gaze where there is a secret to be discovered, and mortals have always been glad to choose her as a confidante. Something exactly suited to her taste must surely be going on just now near the linden which, in all the splendour of fullest bloom, shaded the street in front of the Ortlieb mansion; for she had seen two fair girls grow up in the ancient dwelling with the carved escutcheon above the lofty oak door, and the ample garden—and the younger, from her earliest childhood, had been on especially intimate terms with her.

Book Short Summary:

One of TIME's 100 Must-Read Books of 2021 One of BuzzFeed's Best Books of 2021 One of Vulture's Best Books of 2021 Named one of the Most Anticipated of Books of 2021 by the Los Angeles Times, Literary Hub, and The Millions A searing and brave memoir that offers a new understanding of suicide as a distinct mental illness. As the sun lowered in the sky one Friday afternoon in April 2006, acclaimed author Donald Antrim found himself on the roof of his Brooklyn apartment building, afraid for his life. In this moving memoir, Antrim vividly recounts what led him to the roof and what happened after he came back down: two hospitalizations, weeks of fruitless clinical trials, the terror of submitting to ECT—and the saving call from David Foster Wallace that convinced him to try it—as well as years of fitful recovery and setback. Through a clear and haunting reckoning with the author’s own story, One Friday in April confronts the limits of our understanding of suicide. Donald Antrim’s personal insights reframe suicide—whether in thought or in action—as an illness in its own right, a unique consequence of trauma and personal isolation, rather than the choice of a depressed person. A necessary companion to William Styron’s classic? Darkness Visible, this profound, insightful work sheds light on the tragedy and mystery of suicide, offering solace that may save lives.

Book Short Summary:

Evangelical Christians affirm together that a dreadful destiny awaits those who reject God's grace throughout life. According to the traditional view, that destiny will involve unending conscious torment in hell. However, believers are increasingly questioning that understanding, as both unbiblical and inconsistent with the character of God revealed in the Scriptures and in the man Jesus Christ. This internationally acclaimed book--now fully updated, revised, and expanded--carefully examines the complete teaching of Scripture on the subject of final punishment. It concludes that hell is a place of total annihilation, everlasting destruction, although the destructive process encompasses conscious torment of whatever sort, intensity, and duration God might require in each individual case.

Book Short Summary:

Jesus the Everlasting Hope of Humankind: Biblical Theology Prompted by Visions and Dreams from the Holy Spirit begins with a vision that came to Don Eckhart of two persons: one a Spirit-filled Christian and the other in the lake of fire. The vision depicts Jesus saving the desperate one crying out for mercy. Eckhart enrolled in seminary where he studied the Bible and the history of Christian theology, especially eternal punishment, a topic seldom examined since Augustine in the fifth century. Uniquely unfolding in the book are visions and dreams prompting an insightful study of Scripture and a biblical theology developed as the hope of Christ-mediated salvation for all. The effects are far-reaching but not complicated. This coherent theology includes afterlife correction and purification for nonbelievers, as well as for believers who never fully devoted to Jesus Christ. This purification compares to Catherine of Genoa's vision in the early sixteenth century. The book demonstrates how God's desire that all be saved can be accomplished according to Scripture. God's sovereignty and human free will coalesce, as every tongue joyfully confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord. The Good News may be even better than we thought!

Book Short Summary:

If we believe the Bible is the inerrant, divinely inspired word of God, from Genesis to Revelation, what is said within its pages about God and his unchangeable character must be consistent and never contradictory. Furthermore, in order to love God with all our heart, believing him to be a just, merciful, and loving God, what we believe from the Scriptures must adhere to the three Cs: Context, Consistency, and Character. For centuries, people have formulated doctrine by taking passages out of context. They have made conclusions about God’s character in an inconsistent fashion and often in ways that malign our righteous and holy Creator. When Jesus came to earth, he did not form a new religion; he was a Jew and knew that God had given the sacred pronouncements of truth to the nation of Israel. What he taught about hell, death, resurrection, and judgment is entirely consistent with what God taught his people through the Mosaic Law, the prophets, and the psalms. In Hell No: The Surprising Truths the Bible Teaches about Death, Resurrection, and Judgment, you will see that the Bible is clear: humans never have and never will go to heaven, they are not inherently immortal, God will never torture souls in a hellfire, and all those who died and have paid the price for their sin (death) will be resurrected on earth during the judgment period with a clean slate and an opportunity to truly know God as they “learn war no more” under Christ’s millennial reign. Hell No is a serious deep dive into Scripture but also a conversational foray into truth, written by a layperson for laypeople serious about searching the deep things of God to uncover the Bible’s truths in order to better know and love their Creator.

Book Short Summary:

"It is a special pleasure to introduce R T (Dick) France's commentary to the pastoral and scholarly community, who should find it a truly exceptional - and helpful - volume." So says Gordon Fee in his preface to this work. France's masterful commentary on Matthew focuses on exegesis of Matthew's text as it stands rather than on the prehistory of the material or details of Synoptic comparison. It is concerned throughout with what Matthew himself meant to convey about Jesus and how he set about doing so within the cultural and historical context of first-century Palestine. Amid the wide array of Matthew commentaries available today, France's world-class stature, his clear focus on Matthew and Jesus, his careful methodology, and his user-friendly style promise to make this volume an enduring standard for years to come.

The Outer Darkness (Volume 1)

Book Short Summary:

“The Outer Darkness” is the author's magnum opus that ties together his arguments for unconditional security and conditional rewards. The biblical phrase “outer darkness” occurs three times in the Gospel of Matthew. This study examines this biblical phrase within its eschatological, soteriological, misthological, biblical, historical, and intertestamental contexts. Critical interactions with Arminian and Calvinistic interpretations and interpreters are met with an alternative proposal that affirms unconditional security. Generally, Arminian and Calvinistic interpreters are agreed that security is conditioned upon perseverance. For the Arminian, you must persevere in order to be elected to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, you will lose your salvation. This Arminian perspective might be called the forfeitist position. The typical acronym employed for this perspective is PEARS. For the Calvinists, if you are elected, you must persevere in order to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, this will prove that you were never elected. This perspective could be termed the proveitist position. The way you live reputedly proves whether you are saved. Ultimately, your final salvation is conditioned upon your proving you are saved by the way you live. You must persevere till the end to be saved in the end. The well-known acronym for this perspective is TULIP. The mediating position offered by Cauley, in which unconditional security is defended, has its roots in a historical movement known as the Marrow Controversy. Accordingly, the name chosen by Cauley to represent his approach is Marrowism, which is used for a contemporary expression of the Free Grace Movement. Within the Marrowistic hermeneutic, perseverance is regarded as a means necessary for rewards within heaven rather than for entrance into heaven. The acronym for this perspective is GRAPE. Misthos is the Greek word for “rewards” from which the term misthological is derived. Therefore, from the Marrowistic perspective, perseverance would be considered a misthological issue. The outer darkness is likewise regarded as a misthological (that is, rewards) issue within Cauley’s treatment. Objections to unconditional security in general and to a misthological interpretation of the outer darkness in particular are dealt with in-depth in this two volume work. Volume one spans the first 25 chapters and contains the tables of contents and illustrations (as well as abbreviations and symbols) for the entire two-volume set.

Book Short Summary:

Architecture and Fire develops a conceptual reassessment of architectural conservation through the study of the intimate relationship between architecture and fire. Stamatis Zografos expands on the general agreement among many theorists that the primitive hut was erected around fire – locating fire as the first memory of architecture, at the very beginning of architectural evolution. Following the introduction, Zografos analyses the archive and the renewed interest in the study of archives through the psychoanalysis of Jacques Derrida. He moves on to explore the ambivalent nature of fire, employing the conflicting philosophies of Gaston Bachelard and Henri Bergson to do so, before discussing architectural conservation and the relationship between listed buildings, the function of archives, and the preservation of memories from the past. The following chapter investigates how architecture evolves by absorbing and accommodating fire, while the penultimate chapter examines the critical moment of architectural evolution: the destruction of buildings by fire, with a focus on the tragic disaster at London’s Grenfell Tower in 2017. Zografos concludes with thoughts on Freud’s drive theory. He argues the practice of architectural conservation is an expression of the life drive and a simultaneous repression of the death drive, which suggests controlled destruction should be an integral part of the conservation agenda. Architecture and Fire is founded in new interdisciplinary research navigating across the boundaries of architecture, conservation, archival theory, classical mythology, evolutionary theory, thermodynamics, philosophy and psychoanalysis. It will be of interest to readers working in and around these disciplines.

Book Short Summary:

People do not like to think of judgment, but “the Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth” (Ps. 9.16 AV). The psalmist “sing[s] of mercy and judgment” (Ps. 101.1 AV). He asks the Lord to teach him of His judgment (Ps. 119.108 AV), and to quicken him according to His judgment (Ps. 119.149 AV). He considers those blessed who keep judgment and do righteousness at all times (Ps. 106.3 AV)., May we therefore be corrected in our mental concept and enter into the spirit of judgment so that God may be justified and we may be perfected. The present volume is composed of three parts. The first comprises notes of the messages on the Spirit of Judgment which Watchman Nee delivered in February, 1942 at a seven-day conference in Shanghai, China. Their full text has never been published and is now lost. However, these notes—taken by Dr. C. H. Yu—have been miraculously preserved and are now being translated and published into English. The second part offers three of the now well-known 52 basic lessons for believers which the author gave during a series of training sessions for workers held at Mount Kuling, near Foochow, China, in 1948∗ These three lessons (on the Kingdom, the Lord’s Second Coming, and Occupation) had not been translated and published into English earlier because of their potentially controversial nature due to wide differences of opinion held among believers concerning these three subjects. Yet we feel these views should now be presented to all who love the truth of God. Their inclusion here is not aimed at forcing upon but rather at stirring up believers to at least consider them seriously before the Lord. The third part of the volume gathers together a number of messages given by the author at different times and places during his fruitful ministry and which have not been translated and published in English heretofore. They cover a wide range of subjects—from the righteousness of God to the helpmeet of Christ, yet they all unite in presenting the fullness of the salvation of our God. May God use this book to bring all who read it into a deeper knowledge of, and more consistent walk with, the Lord Jesus Christ.

IN obedience to the decrees of Urban VIII., I protest that, of the miraculous works and gifts ascribed in this work to certain servants of God, and not already approved by the Holy See, I claim no other belief than that which is ordinarily given to history resting on mere human authority; and that in bestowing the title of Saint or Blessed, on any person not canonized or beatified by the Church, I only intend to do it according to the usage and opinion of men. Book Short Summary:

Disrupting the racist and sexist biases in conversations on reconciliation Chanequa Walker-Barnes offers a compelling argument that the Christian racial reconciliation movement is incapable of responding to modern-day racism. She demonstrates how reconciliation’s roots in the evangelical, male-centered Promise Keepers’ movement has resulted in a patriarchal and largely symbolic effort, focused upon improving relationships between men from various racial-ethnic groups. Walker-Barnes argues that highlighting the voices of women of color is critical to developing any genuine efforts toward reconciliation. Drawing upon intersectionality theory and critical race studies, she demonstrates how living at the intersection of racism and sexism exposes women of color to unique experiences of gendered racism that are not about relationships, but rather are about systems of power and inequity. Refuting the idea that race and racism are “one-size-fits-all,” I Bring the Voices of My People highlights the particular work that White Americans must do to repent of racism and to work toward racial justice and offers a constructive view of reconciliation that prioritizes eliminating racial injustice and healing the damage that it has done to African Americans and other people of color.

Book Short Summary:

This book deals with the problem of evil that the Christian faith faces. Is the Christian faith (which affirms that there exists a God who is omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good) improbable, given the horrendous evils encountered by some in this life; and is the Christian faith improbable, given the evils the Christian faith affirms for some in the age to come--eternal judgment and eternal punishment? Some reflective persons see the problem of these eschatological evils as the most serious challenge to the reasonableness of the Christian faith. I argue that once we become clear about what the New Testament teaches about each of these eschatological evils, a way is opened up to show that it is not improbable for us that each of these teachings of the New Testament is fully consistent with the perfect goodness of God. I then argue that the doctrines of eternal judgment and eternal punishment, properly understood, open up an important resource for dealing with the problem that the grave evils of this life create for the Christian doctrine of the omniscience, omnipotence, and perfect goodness of God.

Book Short Summary:

I am part of a vast ocean of Christians that view the Word of God through a different set of eyes than those of many pastors, professors, and church staff members. I have interest in the deep theology of scripture and recognize my need to be exposed to and covered by the Word of God similar to that of my "called" brothers in Christ. Yet I want it delivered to me in a simple "worker's language." Recent translations have strived toward this end and have made headway. Yet the finished product is still from scholars that often describe the original transcripts from a theological standpoint rather than a worker's standpoint. The Eastern Standard Version (ESV) published in 2001 was written to carefully weigh accuracy against the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek scrolls. It stands as one of the better accepted of sound English Bible Translations. Because of its wide acceptance, I have used this translation for my resource. I have certainly considered a host of opinions and writings of a host of scholars but my source of authenticity has always been God's Word. In writing this book, I strongly encourage our religious leaders to go back to the reading, writing, and arithmetic basics of God's Word. Just as I believe, we need to get back to the basics in educating our children in school in reading, writing, and arithmetic, we also need to get back to the reading, writing, and arithmetic basics in educating God's people in church. Perhaps such consideration is "out of touch" with the advanced theology of today. As a layman, not an ordained or seminary graduate, I might be considered a "doctrine dummy." This book, entitled "Doctrine for Dummies" is written for this vast ocean of people. We are not dummy people, but we are somewhat hindered in our study by deep theological doctrine. This book tries to take us back to reading, writing, and arithmetic doctrine.
