Book Excerpt :

Seven years ago, a night of passion lead to a child born of Drew and Prince Whit’s love. When Whit dashed off in the morning, Drew believed the Prince wanted nothing to do with her, so she never bothered to reach out to let him know about his royal heir. Still, when Whit sees Drew’s little Lexi years later, he has no doubt that she’s his daughter, and he quickly becomes the fairy-tale prince the girl has always dreamed of. Kissing frogs in front of the school won't make your prince appear…or will it?

Book Short Summary:

A translation of the modern Nepalese classic Winner of the Toshihide Numata Book Award in Buddhism and the Khyentse Foundation Prize for Outstanding Translation This award-winning book contains the English translation of Sugata Saurabha (“The Sweet Fragrance of the Buddha”), an epic poem on the life and teachings of the Buddha. Chittadhar Hṛdaya, a master poet from Nepal, wrote this tour de force while imprisoned for subversion in the 1940s and smuggled it out over time on scraps of paper. His consummate skill and poetic artistry are evident throughout as he tells the Buddha’s story in dramatic terms, drawing on images from the natural world to heighten the description of emotionally charged events. It is peopled with very human characters who experience a wide range of emotions, from erotic love to anger, jealousy, heroism, compassion, and goodwill. By showing how the central events of the Buddha’s life are experienced by Siddhartha, as well as by his family members and various disciples, the poem communicates a fuller sense of the humanity of everyone involved and the depth and power of the Buddha’s loving-kindness. For this new edition of the English translation, the translators improved the beauty and flow of most every line. The translation is also supplemented with a series of short essays by Todd Lewis, one of the translators, that articulates how Hṛdaya incorporated his own Newar cultural traditions in order to connect his readership with the immediacy and relevancy of the Buddha’s life and at the same time express his views on political issues, ethical principles, literary life, gender discrimination, economic policy, and social reform.

So he sits beside his father, asking questions about matters that relates to the throne; and the Sakhi people. He is desiring to follow in the footsteps of his father when he takes over the rulership of the kingdom. But there was a problem: he has been introduced to the Christian faith at the only missionary college in the region - a belief that would drive him into seeking a solution to a problem that threatens to ruin his father’s standing legacy as one of the greatest king that has ruled the kingdom: Some thirty-five years ago, a young maiden, Maryann, against the will of the gods, had been erroneously banished from the kingdom; in accordance with the law of the Sakhi people: ‘any maiden found to be pregnant outside wedlock, is immediately sent out of the land.’ There is trouble in the land; and the solution lies in finding Maryann and her child. Things gets complicated as Prince Rufai defiles the kingdom’s royal funeral ground; when he invites his clergy friend to talk about a ‘strange God’ at the funeral ceremony of his late mother - the queen. Balak, King Makimba’s twin, takes advantage of the situation, connives with the chief priest to eliminate his brother; in order to satisfy his age long desire to sit on the throne of Sakhi. Meanwhile, Prince Rufai leaves for Ghana in search of Maryann’s child - the Unknown King, that must be found in order to bring an end to all the calamities plaguing his people. Prince Rufai finds Maryann’s mother in Kenya. Three months later, he returns to Sakhi with Maryann’s second son, Eric; together with the Precepts for the Governance of the Sakhi Kingdom - a book authored by the Unknown King. Book Short Summary:

This volume does not only provide the reader with diverging assessments of the Richard III films, but it also deploys a large array of methodologies used to study ‘Shakespeare on film’. What gives the volume its coherence is that it thoroughly interrogates what those films do with and to Shakespeare’s text and suggests that, at least for Shakespearean scholars, Shakespearean films are hybrid creatures. They are and are not films; they are and are not Shakespeare. They all are about ordinary people who could be our neighbours and about day to day incidents. All of them are simple, easy to read with a nice surprise in the end. As many reviewers and readers in Tamil and the ones who have seen the English manuscript have said “ all the stories have the simple narration style like that of RK Narayan and the twist in the end like that of O’Henry. I am sure everyone with some connection to India, South India in particular will enjoy reading these stories

Book Short Summary:

In the Western imagination, the Middle Eastern harem was a place of sex, debauchery, slavery, miscegenation, power, riches, and sheer abandon. But for the women and children who actually inhabited this realm of the imperial palace, the reality was vastly different. In this collection of translated memoirs, three women who lived in the Ottoman imperial harem in Istanbul between 1876 and 1924 offer a fascinating glimpse "behind the veil" into the lives of Muslim palace women of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The memoirists are Filizten, concubine to Sultan Murad V; Princess Ayse, daughter of Sultan Abdulhamid II; and Safiye, a schoolteacher who instructed the grandchildren and harem ladies of Sultan Mehmed V. Their recollections of the Ottoman harem reveal the rigid protocol and hierarchy that governed the lives of the imperial family and concubines, as well as the hundreds of slave women and black eunuchs in service to them. The memoirists show that, far from being a place of debauchery, the harem was a family home in which polite and refined behavior prevailed. Douglas Brookes explains the social structure of the nineteenth-century Ottoman palace harem in his introduction. These three memoirs, written across a half century and by women of differing social classes, offer a fuller and richer portrait of the Ottoman imperial harem than has ever before been available in English.

Book Short Summary:

Shakespeare wrote more than fifty parts for children, amounting to the first comprehensive portrait of childhood in the English theatre. Focusing mostly on boys, he put sons against fathers, servants against masters, innocence against experience, testing the notion of masculinity, manners, morals, and the limits of patriarchal power. He explored the nature of relationships and ideas about parenting in terms of nature and nurture, permissiveness and discipline, innocence and evil. He wrote about education, adolescent rebellion, delinquency, fostering, and child-killing, as well as the idea of the redemptive child who ‘cures’ diseased adult imaginations. ‘Childness’ – the essential nature of being a child – remains a vital critical issue for us today. In Shakespeare and Child’s-Play Carol Rutter shows how recent performances on stage and film have used the range of Shakespeare’s insights in order to re-examine and re-think these issues in terms of today’s society and culture.

Book Short Summary:

Gene Wolfe follows his acclaimed all-fantasy short story collection, Innocents Aboard, with a volume devoted primarily to his science fiction. The twenty-five stories here amply demonstrate his range, excellence, and mastery of the form that has traditionally been the heart of the field. Their diversity makes them otherwise impossible to characterize as a group, so a few tantalizing samples will have to suffice: "Viewpoint" takes on the unreality of so-called "reality" TV and imagines such a show done truly for real, with real guns, and a real government clawing at the money. Wolfe has loved dinosaurs since he was kid, and in "Petting Zoo" he imagines the reunion of a man and an aged dinosaur who look back together on a day when they were much much younger, and much freer. "Empires of Foliage and Flower" is a special treat, an addition to the classic Book of the New Sun series first published only as a limited edition chapbook. The volume closes with its newest story "Golden City Far." It's about dreams, high school, and finding love, which Wolfe says "is about as good a recipe for a story as I've ever found." You're sure to agree. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book Short Summary:

The Red Fairy Book (1890) is a collection of fairy tales by Scottish folklorist Andrew Lang. Published in time for Christmas, The Red Fairy Book was the second volume out of 25 in the Lang’s Fairy Books series, compiled, written, and edited by Lang and his wife, Leonora Blanche Alleyne. Using such sources as the Brothers Grimm and Madame d’Aulnoy, they selected culturally significant stories from all over Europe, crafting carefully organized and beautifully illustrated compilations featuring beloved Russian, French, Scottish, Norse, and Danish myths and legends. In “The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” a classic German tale, a powerful king locks his twelve beautiful daughters in their room at night only to discover their shoes worn down each morning. Confused and unused to disobedience, he promises his kingdom and his daughters to the first man who manages to discover the secret of their nightly endeavors. “Soria Moria Castle” is a Norwegian fairy tale that follows a young boy who goes to sea with an adventurous captain. Blown off course, they discover a mysterious castle guarded by a monstrous, three-headed troll. Warned by the princess, the young Halvor swears to face down the beast in order to free her and her kingdom. “The True History of Little Goldenhood” is a retelling of the classic Italian story of Little Red Riding Hood, a young girl who falls prey to a devious, hungry wolf. The Red Fairy Book compiles over three dozen stories from across Europe and remains an essential resource for amateur and professional folklorists to this day. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Andrew Lang’s The Red Fairy Book is a classic work of folklore reimagined for modern readers.

Book Short Summary:

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (June 1599 – August 6 1660), known as Diego Vélasquez, was a painter of the Spanish Golden Age who had considerable influence at the court of King Philip IV. Along with Francisco Goya and Le Greco, he is generally considered to be one of the greatest artists in Spanish history. His style, whilst remaining very personal, belongs firmly in the Baroque movement. Velázquez’s two visits to Italy, evidenced by documents from that time, had a strong effect on the manner in which his work evolved. Besides numerous paintings with historical and cultural value, Diego Vélasquez painted numerous portraits of the Spanish Royal Family, other major European figures, and even of commoners. His artistic talent, according to general opinion, reached its peak in 1656 with the completion of Las Meninas, his great masterpiece. In the first quarter of the 19th century, Velázquez's style was taken as a model by Realist and Impressionist painters, in particular by Édouard Manet. Since then, further contemporary artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí have paid homage to their famous compatriot by recreating several of his most famous works.

Book Short Summary:

There may be children whose education has been so neglected that they have not read Prince Prigio. As this new story is about Prince PrigioÕs son, Ricardo, you are to learn that Prigio was the child and heir of Grognio, King of Pantouflia. The fairies gave the little Prince cleverness, beauty, courage; but one wicked fairy added, ÒYou shall be too clever.Ó His mother, the queen, hid away in a cupboard all the fairy presents,Ñthe Sword of Sharpness, the Seven-League Boots, the Wishing Cap, and many other useful and delightful gifts, in which her Majesty did not believe! But after Prince Prigio had become universally disliked and deserted, because he was so very clever and conceited, he happened to find all the fairy presents in the old turret chamber where they had been thrown. By means of these he delivered his country from a dreadful Red-Hot Beast, called the Firedrake, and, in addition to many other triumphs, he married the good and beautiful Lady Rosalind. His love for her taught him not to be conceited, though he did not cease to be extremely clever and fond of reading. When this new story begins the Prince has succeeded to the crown, on the death of King Grognio, and is unhappy about his own son, Prince Ricardo, who is not clever, and who hates books! The story tells of RicardoÕsadventures: how he tried to bring back Prince Charlie to England, how he failed; how he dealt with the odious old Yellow Dwarf; how he was aided by the fair magician, the Princess Jaqueline; how they both fell into a dreadful trouble; how King Prigio saved them; and how JaquelineÕs dear and royal papa was discovered; with the end of all these adventures. The moral of the story will easily be discovered by the youngest reader, or, if not, it does not much matter.

Book Short Summary:

Jerusalem, around 735 BC. Two armies threaten the Holy City to overthrow the dynasty of David. Ahaz, king of Judah, is consumed by fear and worry. Then the prophet Isaiah delivers his message: the ‘almâ is pregnant, she bears a son, and gives him the name Emmanuel. What is the meaning of the word ‘almâ? Without doubt more has been written on the interpretation of this term than on any other verse in the Old Testament. Is it a question of a virgin, as claimed by the fathers of the church, or of a young woman, as asserted by the majority of modern scholars?
