Book Excerpt :

Renowned literary great Eva Ibbotson delivers a final novel in her classic, much-loved style. A previously unpublished work from this favorite author, The Abominables follows a family of yetis who are forced, by tourism, to leave their home in the Himalayas and make their way across Europe to a possible new home. Siblings Con and Ellen shepherd the yetis along their eventful journey, with the help of Perry, a good-natured truck driver. Through a mountain rescue in the Alps and a bullfight in Spain, the yetis at last find their way to an ancestral estate in England—only to come upon a club of voracious hunters who have set their sights on the most exotic prey of all: the Abominable Snowmen. Briskly funny and full of incident, The Abominables is vintage Ibbotson. With unforgettable characters and thoughtful messages about the environment and advocacy, it’s a generous last gift to her many devoted fans. Praise for The Abominables STARRED REVIEWS "A satiric farewell from a favorite author." --Kirkus Reviews, starred review "A memorable finale to a treasured body of work." --Publishers Weekly, starred review "The novel is full of whimsy, charm, and sly humor. The yetis will tug at readers’ heartstrings and make them laugh. The writing is lean, witty, and subtle. Ibbotson manages to touch on ethical messages of human rights, advocacy, and environmentalism without being obvious." --School Library Journal "The writing is skillful, precise, and frequently funny, and it offers an effective counterbalance to some of the story’s more serious social criticism..." --Bulletin of The Center for Children’s Books "Readers will enjoy Ibbotson's final book." --Library Media Connection

A gorgeous picture book biography of botanist and photographer Anna Atkins--the first person to ever publish a book of photography After losing her mother very early in life, Anna Atkins (1799–1871) was raised by her loving father. He gave her a scientific education, which was highly unusual for women and girls in the early 19th century. Fascinated with the plant life around her, Anna became a botanist. She recorded all her findings in detailed illustrations and engravings, until the invention of cyanotype photography in 1842. Anna used this new technology in order to catalogue plant specimens—a true marriage of science and art. In 1843, Anna published the book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions with handwritten text and cyanotype photographs. It is considered the first book of photographs ever published. Weaving together histories of women, science, and art, The Bluest of Blues will inspire young readers to embark on their own journeys of discovery and creativity.

Terrorists as Monsters

  • Pdf File: terrorists-as-monsters.pdf

Book Short Summary:

From the chilling threats of the "ISIS vampire" to the view of al-Qaeda as the "Frankenstein the CIA created," terrorism seems to be inextricably bound with monstrosity. But why do the media and government officials often portray terrorists as monsters? And perhaps more puzzling, why do terrorists sometimes want to be perceived as such? This book, the first of its kind, examines the use of archetypal metaphors of monstrosity in relation to terrorism, from the gorgons of Robespierre's "reign of terror" to the dragons and lycanthropes of anarchism, the beasts and blood-licking demons of ethnonational terrorism, and the hydras and Frankenstein's monsters of Islamic jihadism. Marco Pinfari argues that politicians frame terrorists as unmanageable monsters not only in an effort at cultural "othering" and dehumanization, but also to secure popular backing for rule-breaking behavior in counter-terrorism. The book also explores the way that terrorists themselves impersonate monsters, showing that several groups have pursued such a tactic throughout the history of terrorism. It contributes to a number of ongoing public debates by highlighting how, even when actors like the Islamic State present themselves as mad and irrational, their tactics remain in essence rational. Pinfari also provides an original historical outlook on the roots of monster metaphors and discusses several types of terrorism, including state terrorism, left-wing terrorism, anarchism, ethnonationalist terrorism, and white supremacist groups. In unpacking the functions played by monster metaphors and by their impersonation, Terrorists as Monsters helps the reader understand the political processes that hide behind the fangs.

Book Short Summary:

It is almost a Herculean task writing the foreword of this very important book, Lay Hold on Eternal Life, having also been its editor. I thank Reverend Folorunso Joseph for giving me such a rare privilege. Lay Hold on Eternal Life is not the work of a man but of the Holy Spirit of God. It will show you that although many people, by their faith in Jesus Christ, receive eternal life of God, many are not able to attain eternal life with God, largely because they lack the revelation about what to do. According to the author, many depend on their own strength to run the Christian race but are consistently frustrated by Satan and his fallen angels. But wise Christians know that it is neither by power nor by might but by the Spirit of the Lord. As you read this most inspiring book, you will see heaven clearer than ever. You will come to the knowledge that those who attain the kingdom and inherit all things are not defeated believers but Christians who overcome. You will therefore be stirred to seek first the kingdom of God at the expense of the mundane things of the world that perish with time. It will strengthen you to lay hold on eternal life and press forward at all times (like Apostle Paul) to attain the crown of glory, which awaits anyone who finishes his race well. This book is destined to be a spiritual classic. It will expose to you satanic institutions and strategies he and his fallen angels use to lure man out of grace. It will increase your faith in Jesus Christ, enrich your hope in him, and enlarge you in the grace of the Savior. It will help you to overcome fear and unbelief and to avoid those things that the Lord says will not help anyone to overcome and inherit the kingdom of God. The author’s presentation is quite vivid and practical and will leave you with a great hope of attaining eternal life and of reigning with the Lord forever. —Lanre Jacob

Book Short Summary:

This book is a collection of studies of corrections and repair in conversation, by Gail Jefferson, co-founder of the field of Conversation Analysis and one of its foremost researchers. Throughout her career, Jefferson explored the almost hidden, subterranean world of the seemingly minor errors and mistakes that people make in interaction. Speech errors sometimes have an ideological significance (e.g. a defendant apparently about to refer to the police as "cops" but cutting off just in time to correct that to "officer"). Despite the virtual invisibility of these errors, such problematic moments in interaction bring into play ways of remedying and correcting errors that can have profound significance for the participants. Through these studies Jefferson reveals the delicacy, the subtlety with which moments of communication difficulties and possible miscommunications are remedied, in such a way as to minimize the damage that might otherwise be caused to the interaction. This collection represents the most distinctive, sustained, and incisive exploration of what speakers are "up to" in episodes when they correct errors in their own and one another's speech. Combining rigorous technical analysis, extraordinary methodological innovation, and acute observation, Jefferson explored what she herself referred to as the "wild side of Conversation Analysis." The coherence and depth of her research is revealed in these studies, which include four previously unpublished papers, as well as others that were published variously in less widely-distributed journals and publications. In the volume's introduction, editors Jörg Bergmann and Paul Drew provide an appraisal, for the first time, of the significance of Jefferson's stunningly inventive research into errors and their correction in conversation.

Book Short Summary:

The Poetics of Biblical Narrative, Sternberg's last book, established a new level of sophistication for biblical analysis. In Hebrews between Cultures, he shifts his focus from individual identity to the group, in this case the Hebrews. Sternberg's analysis of the development in the Bible of the Hebrew identity (and alternate identities) is brilliant, challenging, intellectually rigorous and unusual, and almost always unexpected and dramatic.

Book Short Summary:

When John Randolph Price read Candide-written by Voltaire in 1759 and considered a remarkable satiric novel even to this day--he was inspired to write a similar parody for our time. He would take the basic elements of Candide and weave them into a book of comic criticism of today's contemporary life. Price's tale carries symbolic heros through bizarre experiences and disastrous adventures to satirize religious and political extremism, criminal absurdities, strange beliefs, and curious lifestyles as he builds the philosophical and spiritual foundation toward a startling conclusion. The characters are comical, the action filled with ironic twists and turns as the heros frantically search for the meaning of God, life, and this world. With exaggeration and farcical stretches of imagination, the barbs fly at everything considered sacred. Ultimately they find the Master Teacher who has all the answers. It is an exciting journey to the hidden garden where the mysteries of life are finally understood.

Book Short Summary:

RIDICULE (relationships, intimacy, deception, immorality, commitment, ugliness, love exposed). Women are ridiculed by men. Men subject women to contemptuous and dismissive language and behavior. Men treat women as if they were unworthy of any true acts of kindness, honor, or respect. Men rob women of their godly spiritual significance on earth. Men have been able to do these things because they have deceitfully made women feel esteemed for exploiting their body, and they have used money to ensure women accept degradation with a smile. Women have thus fallen in love with money, and they covet the material things money can buy. Now women partake in the unfruitful works of darkness instead of exposing them (Eph. 5:11). Women no longer adorn themselves in respectable apparel or dress modestly. They fashion themselves in fancy hairstyles and adorn themselves in expensive jewelry and costly attire (1 Tim. 2:9). Simply put, women dress seductively. The attention women receive from dressing seductively fascinates them. However, their bewitchment brings attention to themselves in the wrong way. Therefore, men do not view them in the purest of ways or intent. Appearance limits women to focusing on who they are from a worldview instead of who they are in Christ. The error allows men to lead women down a path of prostitution, whoredom, wickedness, and abuse! Think Like a Lady, Not Like a Man spiritually and secularly exposes what men have done to women in a world system that ignores God.

She bound the realms together, so that 400 years after her death, every Briton is still mortally bound to an Umbra – every injury, any death inflicts them both – but her treaty is unravelling. Georgian London is preparing for war with France, but its salons and ballrooms are haunted by a different rumour: ‘She’s coming back.’ Everyone will try to stop her but no-one is sure who, or where, or what she is. Arthur knows Amorrie - his Umbra - will be the death of him. He doesn’t know why she is hunted in both realms. Slip inside the most captivating fantasy since ‘Strange and Norrell’.

These books are supplemented by a smaller number of culturally appropriate books from the US to help fill in gaps from underrepresented countries. The organization of the guide is geographic by region and country. All of the more than 800 entries are recommended, and many of the books have won awards or achieved other recognition in their home countries. Forty children’s book experts wrote the annotations. The entries are indexed by author, translator, illustrator, title, and subject. Back matter also includes international book awards, important organizations and research collections, and a selected directory of publishers known for publishing books from other countries.

Book Short Summary:

His Real Life is about the young life of the West's dominant figure, Jesus of Nazareth. Its focus is on his central desire to live a full human life on earth, not only as his parents' loving child and as a son of the nation of Israel, but to transcend all boundaries in order to live in deepest beauty and widest truth as the universal man. The action unfolds through Jesus' vivid encounters with individuals of every loved and various kind, through the early years of his child-awe at the creation, his event-packed adolescence, and all the startling physical adventures and soul journeys through which Jesus gradually grasps his identity. This drama of self-discovery peaks on the Jordan at Jesus' baptism, when, as a man matured by experience and faith, Jesus achieves the awareness of who he is and who, therefore, we all are. As such, Jesus' struggle for self-clarification is the story of everyone.
