Left with little choice, Orlando heads to Duke Frederick’s court to fight the court’s champion wrestler. There, Orlando wins the match, gets the prize and falls in love with the Duke’s niece Rosalind. Orlando’s win infuriates Frederick because of the friendship between the boy’s father and his own brother Duke Senior, who he has banished to the forest. Frederick accuses Rosalind of conspiring against him and banishes her from the court despite his daughter Celia’s pleas. Rosalind disguises herself as a boy called Ganymede and heads for the forest with her cousin Celia, who pretends to be a young country girl named Aliena. In the forest, Orlando runs into Duke Senior and his men. Then the girls in disguise arrive, and chaos ensues. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English playwright, poet and actor. Book Short Summary:

We commonly think of society as made of and by humans, but with the proliferation of machine learning and AI technologies, this is clearly no longer the case. Billions of automated systems tacitly contribute to the social construction of reality by drawing algorithmic distinctions between the visible and the invisible, the relevant and the irrelevant, the likely and the unlikely – on and beyond platforms. Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, this book develops an original sociology of algorithms as social agents, actively participating in social life. Through a wide range of examples, Massimo Airoldi shows how society shapes algorithmic code, and how this culture in the code guides the practical behaviour of the code in the culture, shaping society in turn. The ‘machine habitus’ is the generative mechanism at work throughout myriads of feedback loops linking humans with artificial social agents, in the context of digital infrastructures and pre-digital social structures. Machine Habitus will be of great interest to students and scholars in sociology, media and cultural studies, science and technology studies and information technology, and to anyone interested in the growing role of algorithms and AI in our social and cultural life.

Book Short Summary:

As children, Charles and Mary Lamb took great delight in exploring their benefactor’s extensive library; as adults they began writing children’s books together that also appealed to all generations. In Tales of Shakespeare they wished to bring their favourite plays to life for children too young to read and appreciate Shakespeare’s work. This collection of twenty of Shakespeare’s stories begins with The Tempest, which explores themes of magic, power and reconciliation, and ends with Pericles, Prince of Tyre, an exotic play of love, loss and family ties. Between these two tales are twelve romances and comedies, all written by Mary, and six tragedies, all written by Charles. Each tale is told chronologically and retains much of Shakespeare’s lyricism, phrasing and rhythm. Together, they form a captivating and accessible introduction to the Bard’s work.

Shakespeare in Children's Literature looks at the genre of Shakespeare-for-children, considering both adaptations of his plays and children's novels in which he appears as a character. Drawing on feminist theory and sociology, Hateley demonstrates how Shakespeare for children utilizes the ongoing cultural capital of "Shakespeare," and the pedagogical aspects of children's literature, to perpetuate anachronistic forms of identity and authority.

Book Short Summary:

Remediating Shakespeare in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries analyzes literary remediations of Shakespeare’s works, particularly those written for young readers. This book explores adaptations, revisions, and reimaginings by Lewis Theobald, the Bowdlers, the Lambs, and Mary Cowden Clarke, among others, to provide a theoretical account of the poetics and practices of remediating literary texts. Considering the interplay between the historical fascination with Shakespeare and these practices of adaptation, this book examines the endless attempt to mediate our relationship to Shakespeare. Howard Marchitello investigates the motivations behind various forms of remediation, ultimately expanding theories of literary adaptation and appropriation.

Book Short Summary:

Suitable for students, researchers, thespians, and general readers, Tales for Shakespeare is an anthology of source stories behind seven of Shakespeare’s most beloved, frequently studied, and regularly performed plays. It begins with a general introduction examining Shakespeare’s creative process and the assumptions about creativity shared by writers and readers of his age. It asks whether or not Shakespeare was a plagiarist, before showing how even posing this question requires extensive historical and critical framing. The full texts of seven primary source stories are then presented, all in modern spelling and punctuation, with glosses and notes. Each story is preceded by a concise introduction which, like the general introduction, is written for students and a range of other readers. The volume includes questions for each text, a general glossary, and a list of recommended further reading. A new translation of a source story for The Merchant of Venice is also included.

Book Short Summary:

This work is designed as a supplement to the Adventures of Telemachus. It treats of the conduct and sufferings of Ulysses, the father of Telemachus. The picture which it exhibits is that of a brave man struggling with adversity; by a wise use of events, and with an inimitable presence of mind under difficulties, forcing out a way for himself through the severest trials to which human life can be exposed; with enemies natural and preternatural surrounding him on all sides. The agents in this tale, besides men and women, are giants, enchanters, sirens: things which denote external force or internal temptations, the twofold danger which a wise fortitude must expect to encounter in its course through this world. The fictions contained in it will be found to comprehend some of the most admired inventions of Grecian mythology. The groundwork of the story is as old as the Odyssey, but the moral and the coloring are comparatively modern. By avoiding the prolixity which marks the speeches and the descriptions in Homer, I have gained a rapidity to the narration which I hope will make it more attractive and give it more the air of a romance to young readers, though I am sensible that by the curtailment I have sacrificed in many places the manners to the passion, the subordinate characteristics to the essential interest of the story. The attempt is not to be considered as seeking a comparison with any of the direct translations of the Odyssey, either in prose or verse, though if I were to state the obligations which I have had to one obsolete version, [Footnote: The translation of Homer by Chapman in the reign of James I.] I should run the hazard of depriving myself of the very slender degree of reputation which I could hope to acquire from a trifle like the present undertaking.

Book Short Summary:

This encyclopedia-style Dictionary is a comprehensive reference guide to Shakespeare's literary knowledge and recent scholarship on it. Nearly 200 entries cover the full range of literary writing Shakespeare was acquainted with, and which influenced his own work, including classical, historical, religious and contemporary works. It provides an overview of his use of authors such as Virgil, Chaucer, Erasmus, Marlowe and Samuel Daniel, whose influence is across the canon. Other entries cover anonymous or collective works such as the Bible, Emblems, Homilies, Chronicle History plays and the Morality tradition in drama. Entries cover writers and works whose importance to Shakespeare has emerged more clearly in recent years due to new research. Others describe and explain current thinking on long-recognized sources such as Plutarch, Ovid, Holinshed, Ariosto and Montaigne. Entries for all major sources, over 80 in number, feature surveys of the writer's place in Shakespeare's time, detailed dicussion of the relationship to Shakespeare's plays and poems, and full bibliography. Sample passages from writers and texts of early modern England allow the volume to be used also as a reader in the literature commonly known in Shakespeare's era; these excerpts, together with reproductions of pages and illustrations from the original texts, convey the flavor of the material as Shakespeare would have encountered it.

Book Short Summary:

Biographer E.V. Lucas deemed him the most lovable figure in English literature, but British poet, playwright, and essayist CHARLES LAMB (1774-1834) was unappreciated during his own lifetime. That Lamb is fondly remembered today is partly the result of the six-volume collection of his work edited and annotated by Irish author and critic PERCY HETHRINGTON FITZGERALD (1834-1925) and first published in 1875. Friend to Coleridge and Wordsworth and author of all manner of delightful works from playful verse for children to insightful essays on Elizabethan drama, Lamb is a hidden treasure of English literature, as his entertaining writings reveal. Complete with Fitzgerald's commentary on Lamb's life and legacy, this is a must-read set for lovers of 19th-century English classics. Volume VI features more sketches and essays, contributions to Hone's "Every Day Book," sonnets, reviews and criticism, letters to editors, blank verse, satire and humor, and much more.
