Book Short Summary:

Cheryl Nixon's book is the first to connect the eighteenth-century fictional orphan and factual orphan, emphasizing the legal concepts of estate, blood, and body. Examining novels by authors such as Eliza Haywood, Tobias Smollett, and Elizabeth Inchbald, and referencing never-before analyzed case records, Nixon reconstructs the narratives of real orphans in the British parliamentary, equity, and common law courts and compares them to the narratives of fictional orphans. The orphan's uncertain economic, familial, and bodily status creates opportunities to "plot" his or her future according to new ideologies of the social individual. Nixon demonstrates that the orphan encourages both fact and fiction to re-imagine structures of estate (property and inheritance), blood (familial origins and marriage), and body (gender and class mobility). Whereas studies of the orphan typically emphasize the poor urban foundling, Nixon focuses on the orphaned heir or heiress and his or her need to be situated in a domestic space. Arguing that the eighteenth century constructs the "valued" orphan, Nixon shows how the wealthy orphan became associated with new understandings of the individual. New archival research encompassing print and manuscript records from Parliament, Chancery, Exchequer, and King's Bench demonstrate the law's interest in the propertied orphan. The novel uses this figure to question the formulaic structures of narrative sub-genres such as the picaresque and romance and ultimately encourage the hybridization of such plots. As Nixon traces the orphan's contribution to the developing novel and developing ideology of the individual, she shows how the orphan creates factual and fictional understandings of class, family, and gender.

Book Short Summary:

God’s Free-Man: An American Tale of Perseverance: A Life in Service By: Ted Freeman God’s Free-Man is a historical presentation guided by God that delineates the capture of Harry and Kate Freeman, who were the co-founders of the city of Auburn, New York. Taken and made slaves from Guinea, Africa, they were freed by the Mansfield Decree in England and came to the colonies as indentured servants, fought in the Revolutionary War, and created one of the most important stations and terminals during the Underground Railroad Movement. Further in, Freeman delves into how their sons played pivotal roles in one of the most tumultuous times in American history. From the pain and agony of their grandson’s murder spree that introduced the plea of insanity to America’s jurisprudence to the excitement of a grandson who worked closely with Secretary of State William Seward and Harriet Tubman, the story of the Freemans brings to light a segment of American history waiting to be heard.

Book Short Summary:

From a masterful storyteller comes an adventure filled with magic and mischief, courage and family. Perfect for fans of The Penderwicks and the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. In the city of Hodorf, the Tattercoats live by a strict code. Only steal what you need, don't leave a trace of yourself behind, and if another Tattercoat is in trouble, you must always help them out. These are the rules that guide Nim's life as she and her rat, Nibbles, live on the streets and the rooftops of the only place she's ever called home. So when a new boy named Otto comes to town and gets caught up in the devious plottings of a former Tattercoat who's fallen from grace, Nim takes it upon herself to come to Otto's rescue. But Otto isn't the only one who needs help: The days in Hodorf have been growing progressively shorter and darker since the legendary sundragons went extinct. The air is getting colder, hope is waning, and it won't be long until the freeze grows so bone-deep that the chimneys the Tattercoats use for warmth at night will no longer suffice. With things growing more dire, Nim sets off into the murky woods surrounding the city, searching for Otto--and for answers. With this story of magic, wonder, adventure, and smarts, Matilda firmly establishes herself as a powerful voice in the middle-grade space. Praise for Otto Tattercoat and the Forest of Lost Things: * "An engrossing tale...Both charming and wise." --Kirkus Reviews, starred review "Woods fills her tale with vivid settings--a Dickensian atmosphere, a fairyland forest--and touching teamwork, and Otto's fortitude makes for a winning read." --Publishers Weekly "[A] frosty tale of magic and bravery." --Booklist

Ralph Delchard, a soldier who fought at the Battle of Hastings, and Gervase Bret, a talented lawyer, have been commissioned by William the Conqueror to look into irregularities brought to light during the compilation of the Domesday Book, the great survey of England. Their investigations take them throughout the kingdom, but the pair often find themselves embroiled in more sinister mysteries in the towns they visit. The King’s work is a dangerous business. The small village of Maldon is controlled by the wealthy and rapacious Fitzcorbucion family. When the eldest son, Guy, is found murdered, his father demands justice and will stop at nothing to get it. Ralph Delchard and Gervase Bret arrive into a charged atmosphere and are entangled in a case far more dangerous than their original task.

Tasmania, Australia’s island state, provides visitors and residents alike with spectacular scenery and intriguing history. Set against the backdrop of this unique place, this collection of three novellas offers tales of adventure and family life. In The Siding set in the mid 1940’s, the inhabitants of the small, rural town of Moses must fight to keep their passenger–train service. Meanwhile, the wife of one of the protestors struggles with an unexpected pregnancy whilst a young girl goes missing, sparking a search-and-rescue effort. “Twin Rivers” tells the story of Jessica, a woman raising her son alone in a remote town in south-western Tasmania. The Mayne Hydroelectric dam is on the verge of bursting due to heavy rains. With the help of two Hydro employees, the looming flood disaster is prevented. One of them, Tony, begins to fall for Jessica, but only time will tell if romance will bloom. In “The Cat Woman,” a rash of horrible cat deaths spooks the picturesque town of Northside, with no indication of who is killing the animals or why. An elderly woman copes with heartbreak and injury whilst rescuing abandoned cats to protect them. Her granddaughter joins forces with the local policeman to track down the killer—but there may be love in the air as well as mystery. This collection presents a series of dramatic narratives set in the beautiful countryside of Tasmania.

Book Short Summary:

Why do men like intelligent women? Because opposites attract. That's what Shelly Green thinks when she meets Kit Kincaide...on their wedding day. Unwittingly entered by her students in a Desperate and Dateless reality show contest, Shelly, a London music teacher, is caught off guard when she wins. Although the show's computer has predicted that she and Kit would make the perfect match -- physically, emotionally, and intellectually -- Shelly has some serious doubts about the hunky, boisterous American when she joins him at the altar. But not for long. A steamy limo ride proves that they have at least one thing in common. Suddenly, amid all the hype, there seems to be some hope for Shelly and Kit's ramshackle marriage, or at least for their honeymoon. Cut to the tropical island of Réunion where newlywed Kit seems to be spending a lot of time on his own or with a French floozy...anywhere but with Shelly. Will Shelly discover the truth about Kit? Can she find romance in spite of a civil war, a natural disaster, and a crew of television staffers of the most dubious character? Do she and Kit have a chance for a real marriage in the surreal world of reality TV? Clever, racy, and laugh-out-loud funny, Dead Sexy proves that love may be blind, but marriage is a real eye-opener.
