Book Excerpt :

Bhagawan says that treading the spiritual path is like walking on a razor's edge. One has to be ever vigilant, train the mind to dwell on the Lord constantly. To quote Bhagawan, "Control the senses, which run helter-skelter; then, the origins of the disease will be destroyed. Let the mind keep a watch over its gymnastics; dam up the mad flood of thoughts and plans and schemes; then, there will be no room for worries and anxieties in the mind. To diminish the wanderings of your thoughts, repeat the name of the Lord; that will keep out your sorrows and troubles. Without the effacement of the mind, spiritual wisdom cannot dawn. The full person is one, who has succeeded in this." One should practise meditation assiduously, since it is the basis of all spiritual practice (Sadhana). Bhagawan says that one should fasten the mind on the Lord and keep off all other thoughts from the mental plane. That is the full fruition of meditation. For aspirants, who want to lead a God-centric life, careful reading of this Vahini will help them to reach the goal of life.

Book Short Summary:

Sai Bhagvatham is a story of man’s engagement with God. The book uses over a thousand personal spiritual experiences and anecdotes that record inner experiences of persons wrestling with their religious circumstances. The experiences, drawn from all religious traditions, are evocative of how the divine engages with man. The experiences with Sri Sathya Sai Baba are juxtaposed with the narratives of spiritual experiences recorded by seekers over the millennia. The experiences with Sai are uncannily similar to the universal experiences of man with God; they mirror man’s journey to the Divine. The spiritual journey with Sai is tangible, poignant, accessible, and more intense than recorded before. Sai is relentless in the pursuit of his purpose, transformation of man, however much man falters, vacillates, resists, struggles, or even tries to escape. Sai demonstrates that in the relationship of man with the Divine, God is actively engaged with man; he is not an impassive bystander. The engagement of man with God is planned and activated by God, it progresses based upon the responses of man, and the engagement stimulates the transformation of man. Man, in his engagement with God, asks the ‘why’ questions, seeking to comprehend and explain God. He is also reflective, attempting to understand himself, and realize who he really is. The diverse and innumerable first person incidents with Sri Sathya Sai Baba create a vivid characterization of the persona of Sai, hence the use of Bhagvatham in the title.

Book Short Summary:

Examines the key role of a hagiographer within a charismatic religious movement. In this biographical study, Antonio Rigopoulos explores the fundamental role of a hagiographer within a charismatic religious movement: in this case, the postsectarian, cosmopolitan community of the Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba. The guru’s hagiographer, Narayan Kasturi, was already a distinguished litterateur by the time he first met Sathya Sai Baba in 1948. The two lived together at the guru’s hermitage more or less continuously from 1954 up until Kasturi’s death, in 1987. Despite Kasturi’s influential hagiography, Sathyam Sivam Sundaram, little scholarly attention has been paid to the hagiographer himself and his importance to the movement. In detailing Kasturi’s relationship to Sathya Sai Baba, Rigopoulos emphasizes that the hagiographer’s work was not subordinate to the guru’s definition of himself. Rather, his discourses with the holy man had a reciprocal and reinforcing influence, resulting in the construction of a unified canon. Furthermore, Kasturi’s ability to perform a variety of functions as a hagiographer successfully mediated the relationship between the guru and his followers. Drawing on years of research on the movement as well as interviews with Kasturi himself, this book deepens our understanding of this important pan-Indian figure and his charismatic religious movement. Antonio Rigopoulos is Professor of Sanskrit Language and Literature at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy. His previous books include The Life and Teachings of Sai Baba of Shirdi and Dattātreya: The Immortal Guru, Yogin, and Avatāra: A Study of the Transformative and Inclusive Character of a Multi-faceted Hindu Deity, both published by SUNY Press.

Book Short Summary:

In a discourse on 22nd April, 1998, in the hills of Kodaikanal, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba made a revelation about an aspect of God. “The photographer asks you to be ready when he snaps your picture and he gives you time to ready yourself. But, the Divine Cameraman will not give you any notice. You should always be ready to meet the situation. If you engage yourself in bhajan and daivachintanam (thinking of God) – keerthanam and smaranam (singing and remembrance) – you will not be caught unawares.” The Divine Cameraman wants us to appreciate and love His uncertainty. The prerequisite for seeking the Lord who is ever compassionate is to be ever ready and that is something that the author realized as he graduated from Swami’s educational wing into His service wing. One has to be alert always, because things can ‘click’ at any time; there can be a ‘flash’ of inspiration during any hour of the day and though situations appear to have been captured in a ‘negative’ way, they can quickly be ‘developed’ into the ‘positive’ to fill one with beautiful memories. It was an honour, a privilege, and a boon from the highest heavens in fact, that Aravind got the chance to be His cameraman for a few years. However, that did not reverse the roles with respect to readiness. Aravind had to be alert at all times and be ready to “meet the situation” as Swami puts it. He confesses that he has not been alert all the while, but whenever he was alert and sincere, an experience with the Divine unfolded. This book is a collection of such moments – moments that arose at the most unexpected times and in the most beautiful ways to assure him that his Beloved Bhagawan always has him in His sight.

Book Short Summary:

Calling Sri Sathya Sai Baba a philanthropist and social reformer would be akin to calling Lord Jesus a shepherd and Bhagawan Krishna a cowherd! One definitely cannot turn a blind eye to His magnificent work – tertiary healthcare systems, water projects, housing projects, and educational university, which are first-of-a-kind in world history. He has also inspired service activities around the globe with a footprint in over one hundred and fifty countries. He is definitely a social reformer, but He is also much more. His greatest work is the transformation of the heart, which He has effected through pure, selfless love. Once the source and nature of this Love is understood, one cannot help but call Him divine, adding the prefix ‘Bhagawan’ to His name. This book details the life experiences of eighteen students and teachers of Bhagawan’s educational system, which ranges from ‘KG to PG’ (kindergarten to post-graduation). This is just a sample of those that have received ‘Higher’ learning from their Swami – a learning for life. But, this sample will give us a glimpse into what Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba stands for and what He exhorts. It will make it amply clear that it is never too early, or too late to embark on the greatest quest of life – Educare.

Book Short Summary:

“What Bhagawan Baba told me during this visit was, I believe, the essence of all religious teachings. It is, therefore, not really important what occupation I may have, or where I may live in order to speed up my journey to self-realisation. It is, however, very important that I extend unconditional love to all around me and render unconditional service in the best way I can.” - Dr. Mehdi N. Bahadori (‘Love and Service’) Amazing grace! The first volume of Full Flame: Infinite Scenarios was blessed by Bhagawan on 26th November, 2009. It is not easy for the vast majority of educated devotees to get hold of a copy of many of these essays in out-of-print publications. These extraordinary human experiences are in danger of being lost to Sai devotees now spread the world over. Here is yet another compendium of Sai, covering almost every aspect of Sai Bhagawan – from the biographical to the metaphysical and philosophical – for the enjoyment and edification of even the common reader. Several authors here recount Sai experiences of earlier decades, beginning with the ‘40s. Each of these articles takes up some aspect of the mission, such as education, health, divinity, etc. The volume adds up to an overview of the entire mission to-date and its key cast in this cosmic play, and the divine wisdom, insight, patience, and perseverance, with which Swami has gathered His devotees for unconditional love and service. The rising, surging generations of devotees especially need to know about them. I place this book, Full Flame II: Unconditional Love, too at the Lotus Feet of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Dr. Ranga Rao is a Visiting Faculty at Prasanthi Nilayam Campus of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (Swami’s University).

Book Short Summary:

"...This is a very profound concept put in a very simple and beautiful format"

as written in the Foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

In October 2007, author Satya Saurabh Khosla's article predicting the recession was published in Business Times, Singapore. Millions suffered despite its accurate warning. While analysing this later, he felt that preventing a recession will help society more. How to Prevent Recession seeks to rely on ethics in the strategy used for life and work. Values are a 'Strategy for living life'. These are applied at work to prevent recession. If profit becomes the only purpose of life, it disturbs the framework which sustains society. How to Prevent Recession uses the ancient framework of four goals of life. It applies these goals to business from a strategy of life. This book compares profit to the speed of a car. If personal and firm's profit is only maximised brakes are forgotten. Management Ideas given by Porter state that strategy is an 'optimisation effort'. Profit, too, should result from it. A car's speed is optimised when it considers criteria like bad roads to avoid jerks for passengers, fuel efficiency and reducing speed to prevent a crash. Ancient wisdom trains the human mind. Then, the Truth about optimum strategy emerges from within, as we drive the car of life to work. Strategy is a way of achieving a goal. So, ancient Indian wisdom of four goals of life are like a car's four wheels. An 'optimisation effort' balances the pressure. The wisdom of using righteous conduct prevents recession.

"The book makes the important point that any business strategy should emerge from a conception of a decent life rooted in spirituality." Pradip Khandwalla, former Director, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. "Excellent work. Brilliant in its integration of ancient Indian Truths with the concept of mangement" Prof P.N. Sharma, Member, Governing Body, Library of Tibetan Works & Archives.

Book Short Summary:

The fruit of a thesis for a doctoral degree in comparative religions and mysticism, A Journey To Self-Peace is Dr. Abdelfattah Mohsen Badawi's gift to the spiritual seekers of contemporary society. Bringing together faith that walks different roads and signifying that all roads lead to the same goal, Dr. Badawi lays before the reader the problems faced by humanity today and their solution, which can be found by embarking on a journey to discover peace within oneself, the Self that is a spark of Almighty God. On this sacred journey to self-peace, Dr. Badawi walks the road laid down by Sufi saints, adhering to his faith in Islam. He adopts the sacred method of repetition of the Name of God, called dhikr in Sufism and namasmarana in Sanathana Dharma. A Journey To Self-Peace expounds on the benefits of the practice of repetition of the Name, the obstacles that lie on this sacred road Godward, and the scientific analysis that proves this method as a solution to the physical, mental, and social ills faced by humanity. This book brings to fore and highlights the benefits of a practice, which is, according to God Incarnate, the Avatar Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the easiest method to attain realisation of God in the present age.

Book Short Summary:

Within most pre-modern, Indian traditions of yoga, the role of the guru is absolutely central. Indeed, it was often understood that yoga would simply not work without the grace of the guru. The modern period saw the dawn of new, democratic, scientific modes of yoga practice and teaching. While teachings and gurus have always adapted to the times and circumstances, the sheer pace of cultural change ushered in by modernity has led to some unprecedented innovations in the way gurus present themselves and their teachings, and the way they are received by their students. Gurus of Modern Yoga explores the contributions of individual gurus to the formation of the practices and discourses of yoga today. The focus is not limited to India, but also extends to the teachings of yoga gurus in the modern, transnational world, and within the Hindu diaspora. Each section deals with a different aspect of the guru within modern yoga. Included are extensive considerations of the transnational tantric guru; the teachings of modern yoga's best-known guru, T. Krishnamacharya, and those of his principal disciples; the place of technology, business and politics in the work of global yoga gurus; and the role of science and medicine. As a whole, the book represents an extensive and diverse picture of the place of the guru, both past and present, in contemporary yoga practice.

So says Bhagawan to His devotees in one of His addresses. Unfortunately, as only the superficial and worldly meanings of the scriptural texts are expounded these days, men’s devotion is growing weaker continually. It is essential for everyone to understand the inner meaning of the vedantic texts. In this book, Bhagawan beautifully expounds the inner messages behind rituals we perform each day. It provides rare insight into Indian culture and tradition and to the little known aspects of our lives."

Book Short Summary:

The Bhagawan Uvacha series brings to devotees the world over, a compilation of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's teachings in the form of quotations, skilfully compiled and woven together by Shri. N. S. Venkatesh, the compiler. In this book in the series, Only Love, Shri. Venkatesh says, "Love is a very special word. Much spoken of and sadly much misunderstood. Bhagawan speaks of love through images... a sandalwood tree that gives fragrance to the axe that chops it down, a mother whose life holds no value before the life of her little one. Love is all about selfless living, holding nothing back, and giving oneself away completely. How are we to comprehend this divine trait that proverbially ‘makes the world go round’? If love could speak, what would it say? Listen to Bhagawan, love personified, as He speaks in the next few pages..."

When asked to hand over the reins of one’s life to another, one generally feels insecure. One associates giving up with losing control. But, surrender is not about losing control. It’s about allowing a higher wisdom to take charge over one’s life. Surrender is tuning in to a higher will. It’s an attitude, which can change the way you perceive vicissitudes in life. It’s all about letting God flow through. Listen to the Avatar as He speaks of surrender. You might never be the same again."

Book Short Summary:

We are, today, right in the vortex of a crisis in human history. Fear stalks mankind from one end of the world to the other. Anxiety rules the heart of man and deprives him, everywhere, of sleep and rest and joy and laughter. Virtue has become rare and wickedness puts on respectable robes. In the family, in society, in the nation, and in the community of man, there is a pathetic cry for peace, shanti! But, we need not despair. We have a Prasanthi Nilayam, the Abode of Supreme Peace, where Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has inaugurated the process of re-establishing Prasanthi (highest spiritual peace)! His Miraculous Powers proclaim Him a God. His Omniscience astounds the pundits of science. His Omnipresence is felt even across the seven seas. His Grace is available to all, who cleanse their hearts with the tears of repentance. He is thirty-six years of age, now and He has promised to wear this human habiliment for well-nigh sixty years more. He teaches us the secret of Prasanthi in conversation, by speeches, and through His letters and writings. These last are to be found in the monthly magazine, published from the Prasanthi Nilayam, and this book is the English Translation of a series He wrote, on the subject, “Prasanthi”. Study it with devotion, dear reader, and practise its lessons, for they are from the Avatar of the Lord Himself, come to retell the ancient wisdom to men, who have lost the way.

Swami has often used this analogy to bring out the impermanence of the body and the fickleness of the mind. This book aims to bring out other forms of relationships mentioned by Bhagawan, between the gross and the subtle, the confined and the permeating, the limited and the limitless, the body and the mind. Book Short Summary:

This book helps us to understand our basic nature, identity and existence of our real self i. e. ego ‘I’. We all are haunted by the eternal question ‘Who am I’. We want to know who really we are. From where we have come in this world and where will we go after death? What really we are? Who created us? What does He wants to achieve from us? What is our role? We all are in search to know our own-self (soul) and the Creator God. This book is an answer to our basic quest. God has created us out of Himself thru His Maya. Maya has separated us from God and created ignorance to forget our identity. But we are the part & parcel of God. We have lost our real identity due to Maya. This book is a practical guide to remove the curtains of Maya, so that we can know our self & merge back into Brahman. Then only we can really say that ‘I am Brahman’ or ‘So-ham’ or ‘Thou Art That I am’. The whole universe is physical body of God on which He has a complete control.

Book Short Summary:

About the Book “First I give you what you want so that gradually you will want what I have really come to give you– Liberation itself!” The vast number of visitors from all over the world, from all walks of life and all faiths has been converging at Prasanthi Nilayam in a remote region of Southern India just to have a glimpse of a Holy man, Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the Avatar of the present Age. Royalty, Heads of State, Politicians, Industrialists, Judges, Priests, Doctors, Army Generals, Scientists, Actors, Cricketers, Teachers, Students, General Public - all congregate at this Abode of Supreme Peace. His Ashram resembles a mini United Nations of spiritual seekers, with groups of foreign devotees wearing different coloured scarves for country-wise identification. The book contains dramatic eye-witness accounts of extraordinary Sai phenomena and the wonders taking place in Sai Baba’s Ashram. Never before in the history of the world have there been so many indications of the descent of the Full Avatar in human form. The miracles of Krishna and Jesus must be taken on trust and faith; those of Sri Sathya Sai Baba you can see for yourself. The author describes the various ways how Sri Sathya Sai Baba is transforming humanity; discusses the factors on which his devotees base their belief in him; outlines his Mission and explains how he is achieving it. The danger from which Man has to be rescued has never been so great and the evil over the Earth never so pronounced as now. Sathya Sai Baba’s Mission starts with nothing less than the transformation of humanity; to reinstate the supremacy of the spirit over matter and offer liberation itself! Sathya Sai Baba is short in stature, has a huge halo of hair on his head, wears an orange robe, walks as though his feet are gliding on the floor, displays a majestic grace, works all day long but at the same time maintains an austere life style. He is a fountain of knowledge although he has never read any books; he speaks in the most profound way with remarkable clarity and spontaneity, as he has no need to think; he always gives discourses impromptu, as he has no need of any notes or preparation; he replies to searching questions by scientists, theologians and other intellectuals with a ready and spontaneous answer on any subject. This Avatar never engages in any spiritual practice: does no Japa, or reciting the holy name; no Dhyana, or meditating; and no Yoga, practising union with God. He knows no worship or prayer, for He is the Highest. He only teaches you to worship and pray. The Rishis and Saints of yore evolved through spiritual practice to high levels of consciousness and God realization to ascend heavenwards. The Avatar, by contrast, is already born fully divine and descends downwards. His humanitarian projects are unique like his Schools and Universities that provide free education; world-class Super-Specialty Hospitals in rural areas that provide free treatment to one and all; and massive water systems that provide drinking water to millions of people in drought-prone districts, all established in record time. Sathya Sai Baba’s Global Education Programme based on human values aims to bring about worldwide social transformation, reduce strife and turmoil, and unite mankind to live as one family in peace and harmony. The author describes the worldwide Sai Movement, with special reference to Latin America where the Sai Spirit has spread like wild fire, crossing the barriers of language, religion and culture.

Book Short Summary:

This book is for those in quest of Reality. The first two chapters deal with the Origin and Process of Creation. Nobel Prize-winning quantum physicists and others of the twentieth-century had their first non-sensory experience of reality, as the Mystics did. The models of modern physics became akin to those of Eastern philosophy. Modern science has discovered a reality beyond the physical world, endorsing ancient Vedic teachings of Illusion, that Truth or Reality does not lie in what is seen but in what is unseen. Vedanta deals with the Origen and the Beginning of Creation. Science does not deal with the origin of the universe, but only describes the early beginnings and evolutions, after the event-CRNS Scientist. “The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena; it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence” Nikolai Tesla. The book refers to the world at a deeper level, and describes the Sub-structure, the Absolute Substance and the Ground of all Existence. It describes how Mind creates matter by dissolving the distinction between subject and object through acts of conscious observation and interaction. Modern Science is changing western thinking to converge with the revelations of the ancient seers, re-strengthening mankind’s belief in a Supreme Being. From here on, Nature, Man and God all seem to converge.

Book Short Summary:

'Life Is A Dream, Realize It!' is the third in the series of books written by the authoress, Ms. Joy Thomas, based on Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's four maxims on life. She has written all these books based on her experiences and the teachings of Bhagawan as also from her interactions with devotees. In this book, she writes about various types of dreams and finally concludes that life itself is a dream from which everyone must awaken and get realisation of the true self. She has discussed sin and repentance, cleansing of mind and service, practising the teachings of Bhagawan in life in order to get His grace, what is true wisdom, what is meant by 'living in God', etc. among other subjects. There is an interesting incident involving the author and Prof. N. Kasturi. She has written about the doubt of a Balvikas student about the purpose of life and how she dealt with it. For the benefit of readers, she has included 108 sayings of Bhagawan Baba kept for daily practice by her husband for helping him to follow His teachings. There is a chapter on the parable 'Return Of The Prodigal Son' in which the author stresses on keeping the sense of discrimination pure without any prejudice. The author also describes in detail the five sheaths that cover the human body. This book is an illustration of the author's efforts to awaken from the dream of what one is not and how to attain full realisation of what one really is, and of the impact of Bhagawan's teachings and the power of His presence to transform the life of anyone who chooses to follow His teachings. She has cited a number of sayings of Bhagawan Baba and also that of Jesus Christ, to back her views on the different subjects that she has dealt with in this book.
