Book Short Summary:

Filled with hard-won personal observations and practical, tested exercises for following The Way, Every Day Tao lives somewhere between the Tao of this and that, so popular lately (good advice, maybe, but is it Taoism?) and the more traditional teachings of writers steeped in academic study and Eastern culture. Leonard Willoughby comes to the Tao as a Western seeker, looking for both a spiritual practice and a method of living. In this book, he frankly recounts his own struggles--with life and with the Tao. He offers a plenitude of suggestions both for understanding and following the Way and for becoming a fully-integrated personality. After his initiation into the Jade Purity School of Tao, Willoughby's teacher suggested that he write a book on philosophical teachings of this particular school--for Western seekers like himself. You might say this book answers the question: If Tao is the Way, where are we going? In Part One, the author explains the Way, Tao, in simple terms for western minds. In Part Two, Te, or Virtue, he gives readers the advice, stories, and skills they need for the journey. How to give up negativity, perceive reality, practice self-forgiveness and self love. Plus advice about celibacy and sexuality, and more. In Part Three--Sam Ching--Three Realms of Being--the book culminates in the answer--we're going home to our True Selves.

Book Short Summary:

The Himalayan Bond is about a fascinating journey through India taken by two young men one Indian, Dani, and one British, Roland to explore the conflicting issues of globalisation and sustainability that affect both urban and rural areas in modern-day India. They take in the hustle and bustle of Delhi before heading to the lower Himalayas and Danis childhood home. Dani introduces Roland to the charm and magic of India and leads him to his ancestral mountain landscape, revealing the treasures, simplicity and spirituality of Danis heritage. The themes that the author has tried to explore, and his observations, are thoughtful and compelling. The story takes place against the backdrop of the International Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen in 2009. The author has written a lot of the book from his own experience and feels very strongly about the issues discussed as they threaten his family home and the countryside he is so familiar with. He explains the nuances of everyday living and provides a rare insight into age-old values somehow untarnished by modernity. During their travels, they explore and discuss a variety of topics: the history of the area and what the British Empire meant to people in India; old skills and traditions that are disappearing; the importance of rituals and karma and the way they are passed down through generations; the caste system and arranged marriages; environmental problems; poverty; farming; the effects of building hydro dams; how large corporations are displacing villages; how age-old sustainable ways and skills are being lost in the race for a modern lifestyle in the Himalayas and around the world; and party politics, with power as an end in itself. Tales from Indias history, mythology and changing lifestyle are used to help explain Indias rich past and the challenges for its future. ...A good and informative read for anyone wanting to travel to the country. Book Short Summary:

On September 11th, 2001, Port Authority Police Officer, William Jimeno, left his home unsuspecting of what the day was about to hold. Just a few hours later he lay crushed beneath the Twin Towers’ 220 stories of concrete, steel, and glass. Most of his team had already died. He and his sergeant were helplessly trapped. The pain and anguish had only begun. Many have seen Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, which depicted this horrific day and the rescue of Will and his Sergeant, John McLoughlin. Surviving the initial collapse was only part of the story. Multiple surgeries, forced retirement, survivor’s guilt, depression, and learning to live again with PTSD were waiting outside of the rubble. Will has teamed with clinical psychologist, Michael Moats, to share his message of faith, hope, and love and how these three things helped him navigate the unchartered waters of learning to live again after the tragedy of September 11th. Although Sunrise Through the Darkness speaks directly to first responders, Will’s message is relatable to anyone who has suffered trauma or loves someone who has. Sunrise Through the Darkness marks the 20 year anniversary of 9/11 and gives honor to those that died through Will’s continued work of healing and serving others.

Book Short Summary:

In He's Just Not Your Type (And That's a Good Thing), a relationship expert and dating columnist shares her counterintuitive approach to lasting love: encouraging women to date their "non-types." After years of dating, many women fall into a relationship rut. As serial daters, they are attracted to the same type of man time and again. Clearly, something's not working. But the problem is not that he's just not that into them—the reality is, he's just not their type. Relationship expert and life coach Andrea Syrtash hears the disbelief in her clients' voices when they admit that their "Mr. Right" relationship has again gone wrong. In He's Just Not Your Type, Syrtash challenges readers to date outside their comfort zones and poses hard-hitting questions: What if the kind of man they think will make them happy never will? What would happen if they dated someone they'd never considered dating? In each chapter, Syrtash shares stories of women who have found lasting happiness with their non-types (NTs) and provides exercises designed to help readers assess their big-picture goals and core values. In doing so, she shows women how to make better choices in dating so they are more likely to find true love.

Book Short Summary:

Raising My Rainbow is Lori Duron’s frank, heartfelt, and brutally funny account of her and her family's adventures of distress and happiness raising a gender-creative son. Whereas her older son, Chase, is a Lego-loving, sports-playing boy's boy, Lori's younger son, C.J., would much rather twirl around in a pink sparkly tutu, with a Disney Princess in each hand while singing Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi." C.J. is gender variant or gender nonconforming, whichever you prefer. Whatever the term, Lori has a boy who likes girl stuff—really likes girl stuff. He floats on the gender-variation spectrum from super-macho-masculine on the left all the way to super-girly-feminine on the right. He's not all pink and not all blue. He's a muddled mess or a rainbow creation. Lori and her family choose to see the rainbow. Written in Lori's uniquely witty and warm voice and launched by her incredibly popular blog of the same name, Raising My Rainbow is the unforgettable story of her wonderful family as they navigate the often challenging but never dull privilege of raising a slightly effeminate, possibly gay, totally fabulous son. Book Short Summary:

With over one hundred thousand years old in oral tradition, the upanishads reveal amazing formulas for life, secrets to abundance and a clear path to find real love. And yet, few are those who, to this day, were able to find the hidden secrets of these very ancient texts. This book is a reinterpretation of the upanishads, recreated for the modern world, a world that has changed so much in the latest thousands of years and keeps changing even more rapidly nowadays. In the following chapters, the reader will have the chance to finally understand very old secrets that reveal how life works, which laws are hidden behind the creation that God has put before our eyes, hidden behind the illusion, emotions and experiences that we encounter. Life is an adventure that few can fully experience and benefit from, but we can have everything we wish, without exception, we can be spiritual, have love, have more sex, have more wealth, have more friends, more happiness and more of everything and anything. The path to God is the path to anything our heart desires, and so, this book reveals such path, the theory of everything. The theory of everything is what some secret societies have named the Book of Nature, the law that guides all visible things, which means that, within the content of these pages, the reader finds an opportunity to learn about the mysteries of life in a very clear form, much more obvious than any modern world religion has ever allowed us to perceive. More than a book about spirituality, this is a book about life, success and purpose. If you ever wondered why we are here, what is the purpose of our existence, and why do we experience things in a certain way, you’ll easily fall in love with the answers provided in this reinterpretation, because they emerge from the awareness of the truth, a truth hidden deeply within our soul.

Book Short Summary:

The daughter of Hollywood royalty, Chloe is determined to make her mark—and find romance. Screenwriter Jesse believes she's perfect to play the role of Esther, the woman whom his Revolutionary War grandfather loved. Will a love letter from the past have change their future? Romance has never been actress Chloe Daschle’s forte—in life or on screen. But everyone knows who to call for a convincing death scene . . . and it might be killing her career. When Chloe is given a peek at the script for an epic love story, she decides to request an audition for the lead female role of Esther. The compelling tale, inspired by scriptwriter Jesse Gates’s family lore and a one-page letter from his colonial ancestor, just might break her out of this career-crippling rut. Jesse would rather write about romance than live through it after his past relationship ended in disaster. But once on-set together, the chemistry between Jesse and his leading lady is hard to deny. Centuries earlier, in the heart of the Revolutionary War, Hamilton Lightfoot and Esther Longfellow fight for love. Book Short Summary:

Is there a science to love? In this groundbreaking book, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Amir Levine and psychologist Rachel S. F. Heller reveal how an understanding of attachment theory-the most advanced relationship science in existence today-can help us find and sustain love. Attachment theory forms the basis for many bestselling books on the parent/child relationship, but there has yet to be an accessible guide to what this fascinating science has to tell us about adult romantic relationships-until now. Attachment theory owes its inception to British psychologist and psychoanalyst John Bowlby, who in the 1950s examined the tremendous impact that our early relationships with our parents or caregivers has on the people we become. Also central to attachment theory is the discovery that our need to be in a close relationship with one or more individuals is embedded in our genes. In Attached, Levine and Heller trace how these evolutionary influences continue to shape who we are in our relationships today. According to attachment theory, every person behaves in relationships in one of three distinct ways: *ANXIOUS people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partner's ability to love them back. *AVOIDANT people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness. *SECURE people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving. Attached guides readers in determining what attachment style they and their mate (or potential mates) follow. It also offers readers a wealth of advice on how to navigate their relationships more wisely given their attachment style and that of their partner. An insightful look at the science behind love, Attached offers readers a road map for building stronger, more fulfilling connections.

Book Short Summary:

Practiced by over 1.8 billion people, Islam is the world’s second largest faith, yet most of us don’t know what the beliefs of Islam actually are. ‘Inside the Soul of Islam: A Unique View Into the Love, Beauty, and Wisdom of Islam For Spiritual Seekers of All Faiths’ gives a much-needed understanding of this widely misinterpreted faith, and an insight into the essential teachings, universal values, and deep spirituality it offers us all. In this profound yet highly accessible book, the author provides a vital introduction to the essential teachings of Islam. In each short chapter he focuses on a core teaching from the Quran, such as loving kindness, resilience, gratitude or forgiveness, and shares his unique insight into how these teachings can lead to spiritual evolution in anyone, regardless of their beliefs, religion or background. The author also considers the role of women in Islam, as well as the true nature and meaning of the words ‘jihad’ and ‘shariah’. Finally, touching upon current events, the author demonstrates how acts of violence committed in the name of Islam are inherently un‑Islamic, and boldly concludes not only that Islam is not the cause of terrorism – Islam contains the cure for it.

Book Short Summary:

“A beautifully written and well-researched cultural criticism as well as an honest memoir” (Los Angeles Review of Books) from the author of the popular New York Times essay, “To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This,” explores the romantic myths we create and explains how they limit our ability to achieve and sustain intimacy. What really makes love last? Does love ever work the way we say it does in movies and books and Facebook posts? Or does obsessing over those love stories hurt our real-life relationships? When her parents divorced after a twenty-eight year marriage and her own ten-year relationship ended, those were the questions that Mandy Len Catron wanted to answer. In a series of candid, vulnerable, and wise essays that takes a closer look at what it means to love someone, be loved, and how we present our love to the world, “Catron melds science and emotion beautifully into a thoughtful and thought-provoking meditation” (Bookpage). She delves back to 1944, when her grandparents met in a coal mining town in Appalachia, to her own dating life as a professor in Vancouver. She uses biologists’ research into dopamine triggers to ask whether the need to love is an innate human drive. She uses literary theory to show why we prefer certain kinds of love stories. She urges us to question the unwritten scripts we follow in relationships and looks into where those scripts come from. And she tells the story of how she decided to test an experiment that she’d read about—where the goal was to create intimacy between strangers using a list of thirty-six questions—and ended up in the surreal situation of having millions of people following her brand-new relationship. “Perfect fodder for the romantic and the cynic in all of us” (Booklist), How to Fall in Love with Anyone flips the script on love. “Clear-eyed and full of heart, it is mandatory reading for anyone coping with—or curious about—the challenges of contemporary courtship” (The Toronto Star).
