Book Excerpt :

It’s August 1941, and Brick and Mariel both love the Brooklyn Dodgers. Brick listens to their games on the radio in Windy Hill, in upstate New York, where his family has an apple orchard; Mariel, once a polio patient in the hospital in Windy Hill, lives in Brooklyn near the Dodgers’ home, Ebbets Field. She was adopted by Loretta, a nurse at the hospital, and has never known what happened to her own mother. Someday, somehow, she plans to return to Windy Hill and find out. When a fire destroys their orchard, Brick’s parents must leave the farm to find work. They send him to live in Brooklyn with their friend Loretta, even though Brick knows that their elderly neighbors need his help to pick what’s left of the apples. The only good thing about Brooklyn is seeing the Dodgers play–that, and his friendship with Mariel. Maybe, together, they’ll find a way to return to Windy Hill, save the harvest, and learn the truth about Mariel’s past.

With no one else to turn to, Doris calls her elderly uncle Chuck, knowing he has no real reason to help her since they’ve fallen out of touch. But to Doris’s relief, Chuck comes to her aid, armed with his law degree. Acting as her attorney, he delves into her husband’s affairs—business and romantic. The revelations come fast and furiously, pointing to infidelity, shady stock investments, and a betrayal of the worst kind. And when Chuck realizes Doris has secrets of her own—ones that could land her in jail—he must determine which is a greater motive for murder: love or money . . . The handsome pianist for a jazz ensemble that plays the local pub circuit, Victor has a way with words and women, but struggles with personal demons—alcohol chief among them—that increasingly get the better of him. But Victor’s wildness meets its match in the gorgeous and sensitive Janet, whose hard-to-get routine awakens in Victor a desire to leave-off his rakish ways. But Victor’s caddish life as top man on campus comes screeching to a halt after graduation, when booze, lack of focus, and deep-seated insecurities slowly get the better of him. Jobless and increasingly alienated from Janet and his friends, Victor lets his misanthropic tendencies grow stronger, until they are unbearable. Book Short Summary:

The Way Home (1925) is a novel by Henry Handel Richardson. Based on the life of her parents, The Way Home is the second in a trilogy of novels later published as The Fortunes of Richard Mahony (1930). The trilogy has earned praise from countless authors and critics for its startling depictions of a man’s decline due to mental illness and the lengths to which his wife must go to care for their young family. “In this pleasant spot Richard Mahony had made his home. Here, too, he had found the house of his dreams. It was built of stone—under a tangle of creeper—was very old, very solid: floors did not shake to your tread, and, shut within the four walls of a room, voices lost their carrying power. But its privacy was what he valued most.” After years of struggle in the Australian outback, Richard Mahony returns to his native England to live out his years in comfort and quiet. Although his dreams have been realized, he soon discovers the prejudice with which the wealthy view men who went across the world to make their fortunes. Unable to gain a foothold in the land of his birth, he makes the difficult decision to return to Australia. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Henry Handel Richardson’s The Way Home is a classic of Australian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Short Summary:

These two parallel studies in Hamburg and London aim to provide an insight into the different ways in which young people with and without a migrant background live their everyday lives together. The book demonstrates how friendships, tensions, and sometimes adversities are negotiated. It shows how young people construct landscapes of risk and safety and how relations of ethnicity, class, and gender are lived differently in different socio-spatial contexts. In some situations young people develop enjoyable ways of living with differences, in others they live with tensions and conflicts. These may be experienced through notions of ethnicity, but sometimes through feelings of belonging to places and/or specific youth cultures which transcend ethnic differences more often than class differences.

Book Short Summary:

New York Times bestselling author Cindy Gerard’s novel about a soldier’s wife and a daring rescue mission is “smart, romantic, exciting, and so emotionally satisfying” (#1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr). Killed in Action—the most dreaded words imaginable for a soldier’s wife. Jess Albert has been living with them for four years, since the death of her husband in Afghanistan. Finding blessed numbness in routine, she doesn’t dare to look ahead, any more than she can bear to look back. Then Tyler Brown, a former special-ops warrior, shows up at her small general store in Minnesota North Woods, jarring her back to life. Jess knows better than to fall in love with another man who places duty to his country before love of his wife—but there’s no denying the longing and the hope for a future that Ty makes her feel. A world away, a lost American soldier clings to life and sanity in a lantern-lit cave. At his side is a dark-haired and dark-eyed woman whose touch is caring, despite the resentment he hears in her voice and sees on her face. But is it honor igniting her compassion for her enemy, or is it something more? A heartwarming, richly emotional, action-packed story about homecomings, The Way Home follows two women on opposite sides of the world. While they both walk a dangerous path between betrayal and honor, they each must find for themselves where to draw the line between duty and love.

Book Short Summary:

This is a book of essays. They are about the journey we all take through life. All of us are heading toward a real goal - home. We will each know our own home when we get there. When these essays started coming out of my computer, I did not know they were going to be essays. I was totally astonished when "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" showed up, fully formed, needing only slight tweaking to assume its final shape. I looked it over. This was an essay. It could not be anything else. Carrying on with my writing, I saw essay after essay appear on the screen of my computer. Some came out of my brain and heart almost as fully formed as the first. Some required much work. I believe the work was worthwhile. I believe the book is worthwhile. I stand proudly behind every idea in this book. I do not stand behind every word. Every major idea here is transformational and liberating. I do not know how many major liberating transformational ideas there are in the world, but as I write this, I can think of maybe 20 or 30 - no more. On the other hand, there are more than a half a million words in the three books. You may find words with which you disagree. I hope you do. But it would be a step in the wrong direction for you to disagree with the ideas. If you are completely satisfied with your current ideas about life - if you know all you want to know about leading a joy-filled life full of spirituality but devoid of empty religiosity - if you are happy with your relationships with all the people who mean something to you - if you have not thought about these things in many years, and really don't care to think about them now. If all this is true for you, please close this book and stop reading immediately. The Way Home is really three books in one cover. Each of the three is a complete unit, but each book gains strength from the other two. There are forty one essays in The Way Home, and each essay is complete in itself, but is also part of a unified whole. Book One provides an overview for the special person who will want to read a serious book of essays about how to lead life. Book Two is for those who might want to know more about the author and how he became the person he is. Book Three is for those who understand the first two. These fortunate few will already be conscious citizens of the new world already emerging from the ashes of the complete failure of western civilization. They know where they are going and how to get there. They will have gained a sense of direction for everything they do, and they will know how to regain balanced movement if they are ever threatened. Most of them will be able to do this because of a new religion they have adopted. It may be called by the same name as the religion they have always had, but it will be a new and intensely personal view of that religion. This personal religion will use some of the language of the religion into which the person was born - that is, Christians may use mostly the words of Jesus, Jews will not use Jesus' words at all, the different sects of the Moslem world will find different sections of the Koran to emphasize, and Indians will quote the Upanishads. Remarkably, there will be no disagreement, although each religion will be unique to one person alone.

Book Short Summary:

A New York Times Notable Book: “An extraordinarily moving portrait of the complexities and confusions of familial love” (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times). From the author of King Leopold’s Ghost, Half the Way Home is a compelling memoir about a complicated father-son relationship. Adam Hochschild never used the words “Dad” or “Daddy,” just “Father.” The only son of Harold Hochschild—the head of a multinational mining corporation—Adam always felt as though his father remained purposefully at a distance—a demanding, immovable pillar to be respected and sometimes feared. Here, in lyrical prose, Hochschild recounts his privileged upbringing at his family’s estate in the Adirondacks, his coming-of-age in the tumultuous 1960s, and his enduringly conflicted relationship with his father. But as a boy grows into a man, times change and perspectives shift, and a chance for reconciliation emerges from the space between. Hailed by Studs Terkel as “an exquisite memoir of a boy growing up,” Half the Way Home is ultimately the story of a father and his son, and the unexpected peace finally made between them. “It is a primer on the upper class and on class itself, a series of meditations on the burden of wealth to the liberal consciousness and even a commentary on what it means to be a Jew in America. . . . This is a fine and moving book” (People).

Book Short Summary:

Essays by Owen E. Brady, Kelly C. Connelly, Juan F. Elices, Keith Hughes, Derek C. Maus, Jerrilyn McGregory, Laura Quinn, Francesca Canadé Sautman, Daniel Stein, Lisa B. Thompson, Terrence Tucker, and Albert U. Turner, Jr. In Finding a Way Home, thirteen essays by scholars from four countries trace Walter Mosley's distinctive approach to representing African American responses to the feeling of homelessness in an inhospitable America. Mosley (b. 1952) writes frequently of characters trying to construct an idea of home and wrest a sense of dignity, belonging, and hope from cultural and communal resources. These essays examine Mosley's queries about the meaning of “home” in various social and historical contexts. Essayists consider the concept—whether it be material, social, cultural, or virtual—in all three of Mosley's detective/crime fiction series (Easy Rawlins, Socrates Fortlow, and Fearless Jones), his three books of speculative fiction, two of his “literary” novels (RL's Dream, The Man in My Basement), and in his recent social and political nonfiction. Essays here explore Mosley's modes of expression, his testing of the limitations of genre, his political engagement in prose, his utopian/dystopian analyses, and his uses of parody and vernacular culture. Finding a Way Home provides rich discussions, explaining the development of Mosley's work.

For an ambitious, keenly intelligent woman, lying proves to be the easiest way to get through life, in this Victorian-era classic. Lizzie Greystock is a woman of rare cunning and determination—both of which she uses to better her lot in life. This is especially true when she manages to convince the ailing Sir Florian Eustace to marry her shortly before his demise, leaving Lizzie both a wealthy widow and the mother to Florian’s young son. A born deceiver, Lizzie is easily able to keep up the front of a proper mourning widow. But while her inherited wealth provides her with comfort, her true love is saved for the opulent diamond necklace her late husband gifted to her. Though it is a family heirloom, she adamantly refuses to give it up, and it soon becomes the focus of her life and the lives of those around her. The story of one woman’s ability to mask her true self and manipulate those who would do the same, TheEustace Diamonds shows the true mastery of witty storytelling and social mores that made Anthony Trollope a revered author. The Eustace Diamonds is the 3rd book in the Palliser Novels, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order. Book Short Summary:

Long before Jack Kerouac penned his famous American roadtrip epic, Sinclair Lewis wrote what may in fact be the seminal work of the genre. This cheerful little road novel, published in 1919, is about Claire Boltwood, who, in the early days of the 20th century, travels by automobile from New York City to the Pacific Northwest, where she falls in love with a nice, down-to-earth young man and gives up her snobbish Estate.
