Book Excerpt :

Beyond the Emperor's law In the city of Elantra, the law is upheld by a few groups, and the most feared are the Wolves—the Emperor’s executioners. The newest member of this elite force is Severn Handred. Granted a leave of absence to pursue information about his unknown past, Severn joins a mission to an enclave well outside the boundaries of the Empire. And he will be in danger the entire time. Still, the instincts that led him to the Wolves and the sense of duty that keeps him there can’t be discarded as easily as the tabard he wears. While he's in the heart of the West March, enmeshed in a tangled web of mysteries that have been held for centuries, Severn's belief in justice is going to be tested. It's one mortal man and his single ally against a community of immortals who will kill to keep their secrets. But they don't know who they're up against. “This world feels so complex and so complete.” —ReadingReality.net on The Emperor's Wolves The Wolves of Elantra Book 1: The Emperor's Wolves Book 2: Sword and Shadow

Book Short Summary:

Masculinity and Patriarchal Villainy in the British Novel: From Hitler to Voldemort sits at the intersection of literary studies and masculinity studies, arguing that the villain, in many works of contemporary British fiction, is a patriarchal figure that embodies an excess of patriarchal power that needs to be controlled by the hero. The villains' stories are enactments of empowerment fantasies and cautionary tales against abusing patriarchal power. While providing readers with in-depth studies of some of the most popular contemporary fiction villans, Sara Martin Algre shows how current representations of the villain are not only measured against previous literary characters but also against the real-life figure of the archvillain Adolf Hitler.

Book Short Summary:

The Niger Delta region of Nigeria had a long standing history of crises even before the late Ken Saro-Wiwa helped to bring these crises to the attention of the world. The international community increasingly needs Nigerian oil largely because of the political dislocations and uncertainties in some of the major oil-producing regions of the world. But unfortunately the crises in the Niger Delta, which produces most of Nigeria's oil, have also been escalating to alarming proportions, often turning the region into a site of seemingly unending uncertainty and conflicts. The book focuses on Ogoniland - one of the oil-producing communities that make up the Niger Delta. It examines the colonial origins of these crises and their links to the dynamics of petroleum exploitation in the region as well as to the structure of Nigeria's contemporary political economy. It relates the ways in which the crises in Ogoniland are connected to the generalised turmoil in the Niger Delta and argues that they are often exacerbated - rather than attenuated - by the Nigerian federal process and its unique combination of militarism, ethnicity and religion.

Book Short Summary:

This collection of essays brings together papers written for, and presented at, the VI Latin American Congress of Jungian Psychology, held in Florianopolis, Brazil, in September 2012. The reader will find contributions by leading Jungian analysts in the continent from Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile, to Venezuela and Mexico. The essays here share discussions on issues pertinent to the social and cultural climate of different parts of Latin America, as well as the constantly challenging questions of psychotherapy. They present detailed psychological reflections on the specific theme chosen for the meeting at that time: friendship and its paradoxes. Fraternity, conflicts, tolerance and intolerance, mutuality, conjugal relationships, empathy, sympathy, self-esteem and envy, issues of psychotherapy, mythological amplifications, and perspectives on the possibilities of dialogue between people and nations are among the wide range of topics explored here. As such, this book will appeal to practitioners of psychotherapy, psychologists, and anthropologists, as well as the reader interested in how Jungian psychology is currently meeting the difficult challenges of a changing world.

Book Short Summary:

An angry teen, a desperate mother, a missing father, and a shadow lurking in the background. Things were going from bad to worse for Nick and his family. Tempted to run away after yet another argument with his mom, Nick receives a handwritten, leather-bound copy of an old book—a family legend passed down to him from his great grandfather. The book, called Dragon Seed, leads Nick deep into his family’s history and introduces him to another angry young man who lived in the shadows (the shadows of the tombs). Like Nick, you’ll be shocked to discover where he fits in this story of epic proportions! This page-turning, young adult fiction story invites older children and teens into the real-life struggles of Nick. But it also ushers them into an imaginative exploration of the life of the young man Jesus saved as he wandered through the tombs. Best-selling author Marty Machowski uses both stories to introduce the reality of spiritual warfare and how its shadows affect and change us. Machowski, a trusted teacher for children of all ages, presents a thoroughly biblical view of spiritual warfare that emphasizes the importance of humility and dangers of pride. Middle-schoolers Teens will be drawn to the story of Nick and his struggles and will learn, as they read, to also identify the shadows in their own life and turn from them. While the biblical teaching is evident throughout the narrative of Dragon Seed, Machowski also includes a twelve-lesson Bible study at the end of the book to help teens ground their understanding of spiritual warfare on biblical principles. Dragon Seed is made up of two distinct parts. The first part, 24 chapters, is a fun-to-read, dramatic fiction story; the second part is a 12-lesson Bible study that explores the deeper spiritual themes from the story. Youth pastors, leaders, Sunday school teachers, and parents will also want to explore with teens the small group study at the end of the book with its unique take on spiritual warfare that emphasizes the biblical theme of humility. This is a perfect book to read effectively as an individual or with a group to discuss together the implications of Nick’s struggles for their lives.

Larson, Sisters of Shadow and Light is a timeless and fantastical tale of sisterly love and powerful magic The night my sister was born, the stars died and were reborn in her eyes.... On that same night, a massive, magical hedge grew and imprisoned them within the citadel. Inara inherited their father’s Paladin power; her eyes glow blue and she is able to make plants grow at unbelievable rates, but she has been trapped in her own mind because of a “roar” that drowns everything else out—leaving Zuhra virtually alone with their emotionally broken human mother. For fifteen years they have lived, trapped in the citadel, with little contact from the outside world...until the day a stranger passes through the hedge, and everything changes. Book Short Summary:

This collection of essays brings together scholarly examinations of a writer who—despite the prestige that the Nobel Prize has earned him—remains controversial with respect to his place in the literary tradition of his home country. This is in part because the positioning of Turkey itself in relation to the cultural divide between East and West has been the subject of a debate going back to the beginnings of the modern Turkish state and earlier. The present essays, written mostly by literary scholars, range widely across Pamuk’s novelistic oeuvre, dealing with how the writer, often adding an allegorical level to the personages depicted in his experimental narratives, portrays tensions such as those between Western secularism and traditional Islam and different conceptions of national identity.

Book Short Summary:

The words on the pages of this book will transport the reader from the sun-drenched heat wave in Florida to the awesome glory of Heaven. Autumn arrives in God’s Kingdom during its most peaceful era. She participates in making our Lord’s realm a productive one. Many of her angelic brothers receive Father’s medallion as a reward for their achievements. Everyone seems happy—but one brother demands titles, a crown, and a throne nearest to God’s heart though he did nothing to earn his promotion. His unhappiness grows until he betrays God, gathers supporters, and moves from the Sacred Region to the North. There, he sets up an empire and his reign of terror begins. Autumn and Kaela work undercover in the North as God’s all-seeing eyes and all-hearing ears. They return to the Holy Kingdom where they become saints in Prince Michael’s army. Now, the race is on to stop Lucifer from pursuing his plan to seize Father’s throne. A dungeon is built to house the lawless, but angels are light-loving entities who will perish in the darkness. A sphere is built to house the leaders of the North. Autumn is at God’s side when a bloody altercation ensues between Prince Michael’s saints and northern aggressors that results in Lucifer’s capture and incarceration. And, she is present when Immanuel is introduced to Heaven’s angels. Autumn and the Angel is a faith-based fantasy book that discloses the author’s belief that more than Lucifer’s desire to rule from God’s throne led to his fall from grace. This book is the first installment of Autumn’s adventures in Heaven. The second installment, The Trial of the Great Lucifer, reveals the result of Heaven’s first criminal trial and the events that led to Lucifer’s fall to Hell.

Book Short Summary:

Here we have Mr. Lang at his best. . . . The recollections, perhaps, are the best things in the book — of Stevenson, Dr. John Brown, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, all sympathetic, delicate, and perceptive in criticism, reticent to the point of shyness. But the lighter literary essays have that elusive humour of which we have spoken, even in a greater degree than the recollections, and in the " The Boy " Mr. Lang is almost rollicking — for Mr. Lang. This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer. Contents: Preface Chapter I: Adventures Among Books Chapter Ii: Recollections Of Robert Louis Stevenson Chapter Iii: Rab’s Friend Chapter Iv: Oliver Wendell Holmes Chapter V: Mr. Morris’s Poems Chapter Vi: Mrs. Radcliffe’s Novels Chapter Vii: A Scottish Romanticist Of 1830 Chapter Viii: The Confessions Of Saint Augustine Chapter Ix: Smollett Chapter X: Nathaniel Hawthorne Chapter Xi: The Paradise Of Poets Chapter Xii: Paris And Helen Chapter Xiii: Enchanted Cigarettes Chapter Xiv: Stories And Story-Telling (From Strath Naver) Chapter Xv: The Supernatural In Fiction Chapter Xvi: An Old Scottish Psychical Researcher Chapter Xvii: The Boy Footnotes

Book Short Summary:

The Gods of Entropy and the Fifth Yin follows Dyfed Lucifer, the only descendant of the multi-dimensional “Hyperborean Masters of the Little Known Universe” to be born on an “earth” that has a history remarkably similar to ours. His mission is to reduce the suffering of humans (the hoi polloi – the fuzz on the peach and the salt of the Earth) and give them the tools to think independently. Standing in the way of Dyfed’s mission are the Haploids, the world’s executive power elite who captain almost every ship of state. These Haploids are the acolytes of myth and responsible for cults, political ideology fallacies, and a corporate establishment that keeps the hoi polloi slaves to debt. Thankfully, as an immortal, Dyfed has time on his hands for this epic quest that extends from early history to a gloomy future that (despite the author’s disclaimer) bears a striking resemblance to the world at large today. Witty, sagacious, and downright spicy, The Gods of Entropy combines satire and surrealism to hold a mirror up to our own civilization that will make readers alternatively chortle and gasp, and most importantly, reflect.

These novels—The Virginian by Owen Wister, O Pioneers! by Willa Cather, The Lone Star Ranger and The Mysterious Rider by Zane Grey, and Gunman’s Reckoning and The Untamed by Max Brand—tell of life on the open plains, in dusty outposts, and alongside majestic mountain ranges that rose to greet travelers who ventured forth into the unexplored country to find their destinies.

Book Short Summary:

Charged with restoring harmony and relieving pain, the Malay shaman places his patients in trance and encourages them to express their talents, drives, personality traits—the "Inner Winds" of Malay medical lore—in a kind of performance. These healing ceremonies, formerly viewed by Western anthropologists as exotic curiosities, actually reveal complex multicultural origins and a unique indigenous medical tradition whose psychological content is remarkably relevant to contemporary Western concerns. Accepted as apprentice to a Malay shaman, Carol Laderman learned and recorded every aspect of the healing seance and found it comparable in many ways to the traditional dramas of Southeast Asia and of other cultures such as ancient Greece, Japan, and India. The Malay seance is a total performance, complete with audience, stage, props, plot, music, and dance. The players include the patient along with the shaman and his troupe. At the center of the drama are pivotal relationships—among people, between humans and spirits, and within the self. The best of the Malay shamans are superb poets, dramatists, and performers as well as effective healers of body and soul.

Book Short Summary:

A study of recent shifts in the depictions of Asian cultural stereotypes The Tao of S is an engaging study of American racialization of Chinese and Asians, Asian American writing, and contemporary Chinese cultural production, stretching from the nineteenth century to the present. Sheng-mei Ma examines the work of nineteenth-century "Sinophobic" American writers, such as Bret Harte, Jack London, and Frank Norris, and twentieth-century "Sinophiliac" authors, such as John Steinbeck and Philip K. Dick, as well as the movies Crazy Rich Asians and Disney's Mulan and a host of contemporary Chinese authors, to illuminate how cultural stereotypes have swung from fearmongering to an overcompensating exultation of everything Asian. Within this framework Ma employs the Taoist principle of yin and yang to illuminate how roles of the once-dominant American hegemony—the yang—and the once-declining Asian civilization—the yin—are now, in the twenty-first century, turned upside down as China rises to write its side of the story, particularly through the soft power of television and media streamed worldwide. Book Short Summary:

Novelistic Inquiries into the Mind traces the multiple relations between the mind and the contemporary novel. The contributors here examine various types of narrative fiction, ranging from the postmodern novels of J. M. Coetzee and Ian McEwan through the experimental prose of Leslie Scalapino to the popular fiction of James Dashner and Christopher Moore. On the one hand, they investigate novelistic representations of various mind-related issues, including different states of consciousness, Alzheimer’s disease, thought experiments and formation of the self. On the other, by analysing and evaluating in these contexts such narrative devices as unreliable narration, development of conceptual networks or multimodal integration of verbal and non-verbal semiotic resources, they exemplify the multiplicity of techniques whereby the novel can explore the intricacies of mental processes. Taken together, the essays collected here demonstrate the potential of the novel as genre for representing the mind. In its exploration of the problems involved in the linguistic construction of reality, the cognitive function of art and the uncertain status of consciousness, the contemporary novel thus reflects the mind’s urge to understand itself, as well as possible meanings of its own perceptions, creations and projections.

Book Short Summary:

Go back in time to a world before wise men put history on parchment and dragons still roamed the earth. The boxed set includes all three titles in the Mountain Trilogy, over 600 pages. Song of the Mountain was a semi-finalist in the 2013 Kindle Book Review Book Awards, reader-nominated for the 2013 Cybils Award, and the recipient of a Readers' Favorite 5 Star Seal. SONG OF THE MOUNTAIN Orphaned at a young age, Song has grown up listening to his grandfather recite legends of the distant past. But it is his own history he seeks to uncover, particularly the events surrounding his parents’ deaths. That is a secret closely guarded by his grandfather. Then Song discovers an heirloom that links him to an ancient prophecy. His destiny lies within the old tales he has scorned. Song must follow the path that killed his father. FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN Though his apprenticeship hangs on him like an ill-fitting garment, Quon is unprepared for the twist his life takes when his parents are killed and he is forced to flee Miruna. Adrift in the wilderness with no purpose and no protection, he is approached by an old man who hints that his destiny may be more than he imagined. Ancient tales fill Quon’s head with expectations of glory, but he soon learns that being a hero is far different than dreaming of becoming one. TEARS OF THE MOUNTAIN Jubal wants only to live in peace, but ancient feuds steal away any hope of tranquility. War overtakes Kindolin, and Jubal finds himself flung into a quest of even greater antiquity. For victory lies not in the strength of arms but in a promise given long ago. His path, fraught with betrayal, loss, and his own lack of faith, carries him far beyond the boundaries of Kindolin. Will he be strong enough to lay down his own life in fulfillment of his task? Or will Kindolin disappear into the pages of history? Three gripping tales of high adventure, noble characters, breathtaking settings, and literary prose, the Mountain Trilogy entwines the very best elements of children’s genre in a saga that has widely captivated adults. Each story is rich and multi-layered, relayed in an old-fashioned, oral story-telling tradition and flavored with the mystique of the ancient Orient. Book Short Summary:

In a day when rules are being rewritten, guilt has come up with a bad rap. Many parents rush to emancipate their children from such troubling apprehensions--and the results are telling. This coming-of-age memoir traces the challenges of a fatherless boy growing up amidst the folly of his peers and the ever-present predators who cannot be wished away. Faced with the reality of evil, the theological concept of Original Sin looms large. This book is an observation that trouble often springs from circumstances that look pretty benign. It's the prerequisite of every murder trial, that accidents happen from a confluence of events and decisions that seem innocuous but end badly. We who live in the world are wounded by the same evil that sociologists explain away. Yet part of adulthood is the willingness to call things what they are. When Jesus cast out demons, he first asked their names, because naming something is to see it clearly. We must render verdicts. Sound judgment is a forgotten virtue, and failure to judge will leave us accountable to our children for the weeds that have grown in the course of our neglect, as evil that goes unchecked is sure to grow.

Book Short Summary:

In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field. The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. For the second edition of this volume a number of changes have been made. Elizabeth Gaskell’s “Our Society at Cranford” has been added, as has Anthony Trollope’s “A Turkish Bath.” Charles Dickens is now represented with a number of short selections. The selection of poems by D.G. Rossetti has been expanded considerably (the entire 1870 House of Life sequence is included), as has that by Michael Field. A selection of poems by two key figures who also appear in the anthology’s twentieth century volume (Thomas Hardy and W.B. Yeats) is also now included. Several of the Contexts sections in the volume have been expanded—notably “The Place of Women in Society,” which now includes material concerning the Contagious Diseases Acts) and “Britain, Empire, and a Wider World,” which now includes a section on the Great Exhibition of 1851. The volume will also include additional visual material—including four more pages of full color illustrations. Inevitably, some selections have been dropped from the bound book; these will all remain available, however, on the anthology’s website component. The most significant change in that direction is Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. As well as remaining available on the website, that work—like Hard Times, Great Expectations, and approximately 100 other titles from the Victorian period, is available as a stand-alone volume in the Broadview Editions series, and may be added (at little or no additional cost to the student) in a shrink-wrapped combination package.

Book Short Summary:

The Allegory of the Cave, or Plato's Cave, was presented by the Greek philosopher Plato in his work Republic (514a–520a) to compare "the effect of education (παιδεία) and the lack of it on our nature". It is written as a dialogue between Plato's brother Glaucon and his mentor Socrates, narrated by the latter. The allegory is presented after the analogy of the sun (508b–509c) and the analogy of the divided line (509d–511e). All three are characterized in relation to dialectic at the end of Books VII and VIII (531d–534e). Plato has Socrates describe a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall from objects passing in front of a fire behind them, and give names to these shadows. The shadows are the prisoners' reality.
