Book Excerpt :

While growing up in Barbados, Serville Waterman was first made aware that he was a black boy with unique abilities. After experiencing foretelling visions, strange apparitions, and uncanny happenings that included seeing and being rescued by angels from precarious situations, Serville eventually came to embrace these occurrences as special gifts while learning to rely on prayer, hymns, and God for strength to endure all of life’s challenges. In a fascinating memoir accompanied by photographs, Serville chronicles his journey through life as it led him from Barbados at age fifteen to England and ultimately to New York several years later. As he shares insight into his coming-of-age journey into manhood that included many colorful incidents as well as trials and tribulations and obstacles and hinderances, Serville reveals how he continued to strive for excellence and attain his goals while reassuring others that they are not alone in their struggles and that we are all strong enough to face whatever comes in the future. A Journey of Faith shares the faith-filled story of one man’s experiences as his life path led him from Barbados to England and eventually the United States to achieve his dreams.

Book Short Summary:

Twenty-five years ago an extended family made a "return to nature" move to the country. This magical book is the record of their struggles and growth. The book achieves its vividly realistic tone by covering the family's lived experience, from joy to sorrow, life and death, and lofty to such mundane details as manure for the garden. Its pages are populated by four generations--unusual in a time when the nuclear family is everything. Although the work is supported by sound theological and psychological theory, it never lingers too ling in these realms, but continues to continues the daily drama of one family's risky living of the gospel.

Book Short Summary:

I didn’t share my story to hurt anyone or boast about anything that I have accomplished in life, but I decided to share it to redeem and restore the years that were taken from me through hurt, disappointment and pain. I believe this story is going to help someone struggling in the same areas that I had to deal with. No man is exempt from the trials of life and just as I had to be restored, so do you. Anything, any situation or relationship that has tried to keep you from experiencing God’s best plan for your life has to cease when you know who you are in Him. God has equipped us all with His word to use as a weapon to fight off anything that is not of Him. As Nelson Mandela said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived, it is the difference we have made in the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” I truly believe that, and that is why this book was born. The fight I had to endure throughout my life for my family and myself was not a flesh and blood fight, as I stated several times throughout my book, it was a spiritual battle. To be successful in a spiritual battle, you must be equipped to do so. You have to know what your weapons of warfare are. I recommend that you equip yourself with the best and that is the word of God. My story was told to bring hope to the brokenhearted and peace to the wounded and worried. I desire that through my honesty and transparency, those that are confused will get an understanding and the knowledge that they need to find their way and be patient in the process. I want you to know that you are never alone when you join God’s army. Every created being has their cross to carry, and mines just happened to be enduring unfaithfulness throughout my first marriage and restoring my health. With God’s help, if I can do it, I want you to know that you can too! He can turn every sorrow into joy. I am a living witness. I have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, and that redemption has given me the victory over the battles I endured through my first marriage and my health. I stay in prayer continuously to keep myself and my family covered because I know that as long as I’m still living it is not over. The enemy will always try to launch another battle, but at the end of each battle, I win. Sometimes when we are in the midst of our battles, we feel like we are the only ones experiencing them. I tell my story to let people know that there are others out there who have experienced the same or similar challenges that they are going through right now. And we made it so you can too! This book is about bringing restoration to lives when it feels like there is none in sight. Well, there is. Keep living and keep trusting. I’ve been told that it’s not what you go through, it’s how you go through it that matters. I hope my story helps you go through whatever challenge you are facing now or may face in the future with a confidence that it doesn’t matter where you start, it matters where you end, and your end can be glorious. I hope my story helps to answer all of the unanswered questions that you might have when “life happens.” And it does but in the midst of going through life’s challenges remember always to extend forgiveness. I continue to forgive others hoping that I receive forgiveness from anyone that I have hurt or mislead. It is key to you being free. Writing this book has played a huge role in my deliverance and being able to continue loving those who God has placed in my life. Maybe one day you too will be led to share your story as I did and witness it help someone in ways you never thought it could. Lastly, ladies, I want to encourage you never give up your hope in God and His everlasting love for us, because I can tell you from experience that He will never leave nor forsake us. Even when we mess up and take wrong turns in life, God still loves us the same. Keep your mind focused on Him no matter what the seasons may bring into your life. My pastor, Bill Winston always says, “God would never mismanage your life or mine.” He is faithful to perform that “good work” in us that He has begun (Philippians 1:6). The word of God says, “If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment” (Job 36:11 NIV). May God bless everyone who reads my story, and may He give you peace, patience, guidance, wisdom, knowledge and understanding as you carry your cross in life.

Book Short Summary:

How do you find the courage to go on when everything you knew is gone? That is a question faced by Philipp Weingartner several times in his life. Born into a family of insignificant farm labourers in a town, region, and country erased from our maps, Philipp set out on a journey—both geographical and spiritual—across the front lines of two World Wars, and eventually across an ocean to a new life in Canada. This biographic collaboration between Erich Weingartner and his late father Philipp's writings gives witness to the tenacity of the human spirit. It provides abundant affirmation that commitment to a life of faith can empower ordinary people to become extraordinary in times of great need. Based on diaries, letters, articles and sermons, A Journey of Faith details one man's lived experience of tragedy, survival, and a passion to serve the less fortunate.

Here it is; I wrote these three words when I began to journal on my quest to find God in my life. Sometimes we question God's existence when things get hard and we begin to doubt our level of faith. My goal was to find Him active in the victories, as well as, in the defeats while trying to understand the role He plays. Along th eway, I began to discover and recognize the saves He extends to us all and the importance of using them for good. My hope is that you journal through the pages in discovering your level of faith and begin to recognize the saves given. It's bringing the spotlight on God as you grow in your faith; you begin to see Him in a different way. It was a simple question of me asking if He could see little 'ole me just standing in the road. And, what I found is, He did.

Book Short Summary:

In a world full of chaos, crises, despair, and calamities, it is easy to dismiss life’s little miracles, particularly God’s presence, in everyone’s life. When Maureen McCormick McHugh’s paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother passed away, she began to find nickels everywhere—in car seats, in sidewalks, or even her change from the grocery store. She first dismissed the signs, until she realized that whenever she prayed the hardest, it was when she always found the nickels. Pondering over the matter led her to believe that the nickels were signs her angels were listening to her. Later on, the nickels turned to dimes, a symbol of spiritual presence that helped her and her loved ones cope with unfortunate life situations, especially the battle with cancer and eventual death of their brother, Tim. With the dimes appearance every now and then, apart from other symbols, she knows she would never be alone if life’s uncertainties once again befall her. She knows in her heart that when death conquers her, God would let her be an angel to the loved ones she would leave behind, just like her grandpa, grandma, and Tim are doing to her now.

Book Short Summary:

At first, Ken Abraham wrote off his mother's changes in behavior as quirks that just come with old age. There was memory loss, physical decline, hygiene issues, paranoia, and uncharacteristic attitudes. He soon realized that dementia had changed her life—and his familiy's—forever. "How is it possible to lose a loved one while he or she is still living, still sitting right in front of you, talking with you, smiling at you—and yet the person you have known and loved for years is somehow gone?" According to the Alzheimer's Association, an estimated 5.4 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's disease. That's one in eight older Americans. More than likely, that figure includes someone you know and love. As he chronicles his own mother's degenerative condition, New York Times best-selling writer Ken Abraham educates while offering inspiration to help readers cope with and manage their family circumstances. With humor and spiritual reminders of God's command to honor our parents, Abraham encourages readers through often-difficult responsibilities. And though in most cases patients will not recover this side of heaven, he suggests many practical things that families can do to make the experience safer, kinder, and more endurable for everyone involved. When Your parent Becomes Your Child tells the story of one family's journey through dementia while offering hope to family members and friends, that they might better understand the effects of the disease. Dont let this catch you by surprise—be informed before you face the challenges and difficulties of a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia. This book can help.

You know, when you're suddenly unable to move . . . the 911 call is for you and the rescue squad arrives--that's a sobering feeling. You can't even put yourself on the stretcher, and these strangers have to pick you up and move you. You see your wife trying to be strong, but you see the worry and despair in her eyes. I didn't even get to see my children. Just heard friends say they would stay with the kids. Then I’m watching the house--all I hold dear in the world, really--disappear through the back window of the ambulance as it pulls out of the driveway. I realized I might be facing the end of all I was and would be in this world. You never know how you'll react to that until you encounter such a situation--that's where the rubber meets the road. You're faced with the fact that this could very well be the end of your life as you know it. Either you're ok with that, or you're not. I said, “God, I'm yours. Either take me or use me. You're God; I'm not. I'm simply yours.” At that point God becomes very, very real to you!

Book Short Summary:

John and Pam Dysinger started life together with the desire to serve. Young and idealistic, they headed to Kenya with the passion to make a difference in the lives of children and youth. For the next eight years the classroom was their platform for ministry. Then the call came. Like Abraham’s call to leave the comforts of home for an unknown destination, their call was to leave the comforts of employment, for an unknown occupation. In a world of fractured relationships, John was called to come home and join Pam in the raising of their children. Farming was God’s appointed vehicle to unite the family. Together they worked toward common goals and experienced the exhilaration of conquering seemingly insurmountable tasks; together they experienced the fears and struggles of “failure” and the financial constraints of “poverty.” Walk with them through this candid account of their experience as they learned to follow God and depend on Him alone. Grapple with them as they faced the harsh realities of learning to farm; cling with them to the promises of God and the desire to be faithful to His call. Above all, come to know that, while your path may not be exactly the same, God wants this same kind of intimate relationship with you.

On a couple of occasions just before I came to know the Lord, I could easily have killed myself or someone else driving drunk. This was a warning from God that my life was about to change drastically. No one evangelized me. I had warning dreams. One seared the image of a brightly lit cross and crown into my mind’s eye. In another, my friend warned me I would come to know the love of Christ. I thought to myself, “But, I’m not religious.” Nevertheless, by the Holy Spirit’s leading and touch, my heart was awakened to realize I love Jesus for some reason, deeply. Thus began my journey learning who He is, in love and in justice. Proverbs 4:23 states, Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. The question concluding this book and reflection on faith is this: How do you choose to spend your heart in all the limits that shape life? What does my love speak of life and how do I spend my love? I know that God’s love spoke eternal life over me, a sinner, and He spent all His love on man’s salvation. He purchased such grace in the ultimate sacrifice. Now, how will I purchase Him, my treasure? How do I spend all I have buying my field?

Book Short Summary:

“The extraordinary twists and turns of the spiritual journey of Elisheva Irma Diaz reflect and illumine the tumultuous era in which we live. The universally recognized border separating Judaism and Christianity is now a blur. Elisheva’s story shows that the insecurity that has ensued may also open us up to unimagined blessing.” — Rabbi Mark S. Kinzer, PhD, author of Jerusalem Crucified, Jerusalem Risen (2018), and Searching Her Own Mystery (2015) As powerfully quoted by Joseph Shulam in the foreword of this book, “There are medical books written by doctors who have researched, studied issues, and gained knowledge in their professional capacity. However, very few of these medical books were written by doctors who themselves have experienced the illness in their own bodies”. This author’s journey to reclaim her Sephardic Jewish heritage led her on an adventure that began in the early nineties with a full-time Christian ministry that eventually propelled her into a powerful ten-year insightful journey. She went from an ordained Pastor of Pastors with a successful ministry into Judaism and soon after her transition, enrolled herself in formal rabbinic studies and was ordained a Rabbi in 2012. Through this spiritual journey filled with intense study and spiritual experiences, she writes what some may think, but would most likely never say. She has further concluded without a shadow of a doubt that both Judaism and Christianity are broken but God has chosen to dwell in them both. She is quick to confess, “Christianity and Judaism broke my heart, yet, both Christianity and Judaism brought me closer to the knowledge of God”. Blessed be He!

Book Short Summary:

Lucy Watani-Simiyu walks you through the raw and ugly moments in parenting that come when tragedy first strikes. She wrote this book after a season when nothing made sense and it felt like she’d been abandoned by God. It was a time filled with anxiety and heartbreak, and with many questions unanswered. As she shares her story, she gives you permission to not be a hero or be an unobtainable version of someone’s faithful Christian highlight reel. You can be right where you are ... moving toward freedom. As you read, In her parental journey and counselling sessions, the experiential learning from thousands of parents raised many questions and gives answers to questions such as: How can parents connect themselves to the very heart of God? What message does God have for you as a parent? Can children question their faith in God in a nerve-wracking way to parents and yet continue to function sanely? How can parents equip themselves with the truth of God’s Word to keep sane and fulfill their ambassadorial calling. What does it mean for a parent to have a well-planned journey for a child? You ask: what do I do when my child makes the wrong choices? How do I deal with contrary or counterculture? What about parenting guilt? Where is God in all this? Filled with verses from Scripture, examples from the Bible, and practical insights from the author’s own life experiences, this book will help you combine grace, truth, and God’s Word to find strength and help children overcome obstacles. This book points you to the source of joy in your journey by pointing you to God’s Word, the truth that sets you free when the journey gets weary. The blueprint still works—not to make you guilty but to liberate you. Maybe you are a parent who is paralyzed by fear of your child’s choices. You may be anxious, hopeless, and helpless about your child’s future. Perhaps you are weighed down by guilt and shame, caught in a slump, overwhelmed with regret trapped in a dead-end parenting, and numb from a child’s choice. You may be drowning in disappointment, anger, shame, and unfilled spiritually so that God and his promises do not make sense.Instead of tying our hope to specific outcomes, let us connect ourselves to the very heart of God. With compelling storytelling and sound scriptural backup, this book gives you the biblical pathway to help you as a parent move beyond the pain of the present to a hope-filled future.

Book Short Summary:

Christopher and Hilda Talley were living what they thought was the American dream. They had two beautiful and healthy daughters, a comfortable home, cars, clothes, food on the table, a wonderful faith community, and two terrific jobs they loved. They played at life just as hard as they worked for their lifestyle, traveling in the United States and to foreign lands as often as possible. But in 1999, that all came crashing down. Hilda went from a happy and healthy person to someone who struggles for every breath she takes, after an inadequately trained pesticide tech came into her office. Two minutes after he left, she was fighting for her life. The chemical permanently damaged her lungs and vocal cords and led to two debilitating diseases: reactive airways dysfunction syndrome and vocal cord dysfunction. Their family life changed instantly. In God in the Midst of Thorns, Christopher and Hilda share their story, a story intertwined with the testament of God’s love and the power of Christian community, as they began their journey of learning to live a new normal. The Talleys discuss how, in their struggle for understanding, they both found a new and deeper relationship with God.
