Book Excerpt :

Enter once more the world of Roland Deschain—and the world of the Dark Tower...presented in a stunning graphic novel form that will unlock the doorways to terrifying secrets and bold storytelling as part of the dark fantasy masterwork and magnum opus from #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King. “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” With these unforgettable words, millions of readers were introduced to Stephen King’s iconic character Roland Deschain of Gilead. Roland is the last of his kind, a “gunslinger” charged with protecting whatever goodness and light remains in his world—a world that “moved on,” as they say. In this desolate reality—a dangerous land filled with ancient technology and deadly magic, and yet one that mirrors our own in frightening ways—Roland is on a spellbinding and soul-shattering quest to locate and somehow save the mystical nexus of all worlds, all universes: the Dark Tower. Now, in the graphic novel series adaptation Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger, originally published by Marvel Comics in single-issue form and creatively overseen by Stephen King himself, the full story of Roland's troubled past and ongoing saga is revealed. Sumptuously drawn by Richard Isanove, Sean Phillips, Luke Ross, and Michael Lark, plotted by longtime Stephen King expert Robin Furth, and scripted by New York Times bestselling author Peter David, The Gunslinger adaptation is an extraordinary and terrifying journey—ultimately serving as the perfect introduction for new readers to Stephen King’s modern literary classic The Dark Tower, while giving longtime fans thrilling adventures transformed from his blockbuster novels. The barony of Gilead has finally fallen to the forces of the evil John Farson, and the surviving young gunslingers were massacred at the decisive Battle of Jericho Hill. But one has risen from the ashes: Roland Deschain. Now as the last of the gunslingers, Roland sets out in search of the mysterious Dark Tower—the one place where he can set the events of his out-of-sync world right again. Along the way, Roland will battle forces from his worst nightmares as he trails the elusive Man in Black—the inhuman sorcerer who holds the key to Roland’s desperate search.

John is a college student currently separated from his fiance Laura, while she begins a hot sexual affair with her roommate Christine. Though John is anxious to have Laura back, with Christine now a permanent fixture in Laura's life, the terms of the relationship are about to radically change. Either John agrees to be submissive in a menage a trois with two dominant females, or he's out. Eager to stay in Laura's good graces John agrees to anything, including public humiliation, panty wearing, and Laura's unique punishment for unauthorized masturbation: a locking chastity device. She tricks him into putting it on, not telling him that Christine has the keys. Later he learns from Christine that a key has been hidden in his weekend bag all along. But now, the demanding Christine wants him to consciously choose to remain in chastity! John can't help wonder who's running the relationship, Laura or Christine? As the two femmes take charge, John is trained to serve their every whim, to call them mistress, and play their humiliating sexual games. When he fails to please this daunting duo, he suffers a variety of painful punishments from bondage to whipping to being sodomized with a strap-on. Despite the rough demands of his new life, John finds his surrendering role strangely pleasing, and highly erotic. All misgivings aside, he's still in love with Laura, and willing to slavishly serve both women in order to have her. But how long can this strange menage a trois survive? Will John ever have Laura to himself again? Is Christine really falling in love with him? Although John's journey into chastity has just begun, it's certain to take some curious twists as these two lovely, in charge females turn this wary college boy into their groveling slave.

Book Short Summary:

During her 18 years as a kindergarten teacher she developed a method of teaching that provides an excellent classroom atmosphere in which young children can excel in learning. She believes the first two weeks of school are very important because that is when the teacher sets the stage for an exciting, adventurous and memorable academic school year. During that time her students learned what acceptable behavior was in the classroom and while moving across campus as a group. Once they learned what was acceptable, the rest of the school year fell into place and the children were excited to learn. This drastically reduces discipline problems for the rest of the school year. She has mentored two teachers, at the request of her principal, using these methods and both continue to use them. These methods are simple, effective and straight forward. This book is the first of a four book series that describes her methods of instruction and classroom management. The book is full of cute illustrations provided by her sister-in-law, Carolyn Smith. There are also numerous photographs of her classroom and bulletin boards, as well as illustrated ideas for projects that can be both instructional and fun. Patty has reviewed the book with principals, school superintendants and an instructor at Northern Arizona University. All believed that it is an excellent and practical book for beginning teachers.

Book Short Summary:

Life in The Pits has become pretty boring for Timmy Truskett. He has no friends, lives in a shabby house in run-down part of town with his alcoholic father, and spends much of his time on his own. Having lost his mother at an early age, he has been ridiculed by children and adults alike for as long as he can remember. He longs for an existence where he can be accepted by others for who he is, not for the type of clothes he wears or the area that he is from. Approaching his 13th birthday, something extraordinary happens to him, something that will thrust him into a world beyond his belief, and one in which there appears little or no chance of escape. He will be exposed to many emotions that he has never experienced before. He will have to work out who to trust, who to listen to, and more importantly, who can help him in his mission to escape. He will be exposed to immense danger, love, hate, jealousy, greed and above all, will have to make choices that someone his age should never have to make on their own, and have a strong belief in himself and his new friends in order to get back to his old world, which all of a sudden doesnt seem as bad as it was. With the help of some intriguing characters, such as the talking birds and the dwarfs, he finds out that this is no ordinary place. It is a place where the unbelievable becomes believable, and the impossible become possible. Does he have the courage and the will to stand up for himself in a world where there are many rules, and the children are watched over day and night? He soon discovers that there is more to life than he had ever imagined, and maybe, just maybe, it was his chance to show everyone he was not the type of boy to be ridiculed.

Book Short Summary:

A retired machinist, Arthur, wanting to write about the gold mines and the now ghost towns of Northern Nevada, will find an adventure beyond imagination. He will meet the waitress Maggie at a coffee shop in Battle Mountain located in mid-Northern Nevada. She will introduce Arthur to a man who lives in Spirit Valley south of town. Mr. Greyson will soon, after a cordial meeting with Arthur, send to his address in Reno a box with a letter inside. The box contains an old twenty-four-channel CB radio. The letter from Mr. Greyson tells Arthur that the stories he told him of meeting the people at the mines and towns during the years 18801905 did happen, for he was there! He can, with the CB radio in Spirit Valley, go back in time meeting the people who lived and worked in the gold and silver mines and towns. The twenty-four-channel radio will allow one to go through the small door in the woodshed back to the years in the past to twenty-four different locations and pastimes in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Giving the property to Maggie, a future love interest develops between Arthur and Maggie. This romance from the future and in the valley will transcend back and forth into the past. A ferryboat journey up the Colorado River in the year 1890 has many events almost ending into a life or death situation. Maggie and Arthur will meet Mr. Greyson, who has relocated back in time to Jarbidge, a mining town in Northern Nevada. Arthur will visit gold mines and will witness the extreme hardships and dangers to the workers using the stone crushers and inside the mine shafts deep in the mountains. During a time-travel visit to Searchlight, a town along the Colorado River, Maggie and Arthur are pushed into a life or death situation. Two men from the future find a way to venture back to the same location through the door in Spirit Valley. These men are hunters and a threat to the survival of the people in the old time period due to the modern weapons and unknown consequences. Arthur makes a life or death decision on what he must do. This decision puts a tremendous mental strain on his relationship with Maggie. Spirit Valley, over the many years, is a sacred valley where the past and present Indian spirits live. Joe White Feather, a spirit man of the local Shoshone Indians, becomes close friends with Maggie and Arthur, who eventually settle in the valley. As a spirit man, he is a strong force in the lives and events that Arthur and Maggie have to endure now in the future and the past.

Book Short Summary:

Introduction We are all on a journey that is bent with spirituality. There is nothing more telling than when we make it on our spiritual path with spiritual inclination. The first step on the journey is of ultimate trust. The world meets us halfway when we learn to trust ourselves. The world turns light when we get over our woes and see our path as definitive. Book Short Summary:

Becoming a culturally proficient leader requires the kind of courage, clarity, and insight that can only come from looking inward first. It’s a personal learning journey of will and skill, and if you’re up to the challenge, one that will change how you see your school, your students, and yourself as you build your own cultural competence. Consider this second edition of Culturally Proficient Leadershipyour personal road map for navigating that journey. Each chapter of Culturally Proficient Leadership invites you to put your experiences up front and challenges you to reframe your story based on multiple viewpoints—now, notably, with the addition of new coauthors Delores Lindsey and Eloise Kemp Terrell, who have their own remarkable stories and insight to share. Overall, all four authors will help you answer the critical question “Is what we say what we do?” utilizing the tools of Cultural Proficiency to engage in Reflections and Cultural Interviews to explore what you learn about those who are culturally different from you develop a Cultural Autobiography to provide a picture of the cultural memberships that have influenced who you are as a person use the Cultural Proficiency Continuum to examine your progress as a leader in serving your students and communities prepare an intentional Leadership Plan that summarizes your journey from Cultural Precompetence to Cultural Proficiency The central “inside-out” premise of Cultural Proficiency is that engaging in deep introspection around one’s personal beliefs, values, and behaviors in response to human differences is the first step toward systemic educational reform. We invite you to embark on this journey of self-awareness, of moral courage, and of the life-affirming power of human diversity. “I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together—unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the same and may not come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction: toward a better future for our children and our grandchildren.” —Barack Obama, Los Angeles Times, 2008

Book Short Summary:

'Of ways you may speak, but not the Perennial Way; By names you may name, but not the Perennial Name.' The best-loved of all the classical books of China and the most universally popular, the Daodejing or Classic of the Way and Life-Force is a work that defies definition. It encapsulates the main tenets of Daoism, and upholds a way of being as well as a philosophy and a religion. The dominant image is of the Way, the mysterious path through the whole cosmos modelled on the great Silver River or Milky Way that traverses the heavens. A life-giving stream, the Way gives rise to all things and holds them in her motherly embrace. It enables the individual, and society as a whole, to harmonize the disparate demands of daily life and achieve a more profound level of understanding. This new translation draws on the latest archaeological finds and brings out the word play and poetry of the original. Simple commentary accompanies the text, and the introduction provides further historical and interpretative context. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Short Summary:

Girls grow up wanting to be mothers. From a very early age, we play and pretend with our dolls. In teenage years, we practice mothering skills while we babysit. Motherhood is one of the crowning glories of being a woman. But what if it doesn't happen for you? You never hear the words, "You're pregnant" or feel life inside of you, and infertility moves in. Infertility is a life-questioning event. It invades the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual being of a woman. Women who face it tend to crawl into a protective, isolative shell. No One to Call Me Mommy provides companionship, strength, and a voice to break through that isolation. It is not a book about infertility; it is a book about hope and healing through the journey.
