When Candida Baker left her city lifestyle and high-profile job to live in the hills behind Byron Bay, little did she realise this was the first step on a journey of self-discovery - through her natural horsemanship, photography and writing - to an enhanced sense of spiritual and psychic connection with the animal world. Told through a series of true stories, at its essence The Heart of a Horse is about learning to 'listen' with all our senses. Using her lifelong love of horses as the main conduit for bridging the gap between our thought processes and intuition, Candida describes the magic that happens when we keep an open mind about the idea of communication.

Book Short Summary:

An extraordinarily powerful and critically acclaimed debut - Val McDermid called it 'brutal and beautiful' - to compare to such classics as Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Iain Banks' The Wasp Factory. In the magnificent wilderness that is the Scottish Highlands, Aaron and Hugh have been friends for as long as they can remember, bound by a shared affinity for their surroundings and an increasing sense of alienation from the remote, close-knit community that is their home. But when a young woman - fleeing life in the city and a broken love affair - moves to the area, the ties that bind the boys are slowly, irrevocably stretched to near-breaking point. And as the strain on Aaron and Hugh's friendship builds, so the violence that is endemic in the land begins to infect them both. Driven to the very edge of reason, they turn on their world to vent their frustration and anger and hurt in the only way they know, embarking on a spree of quite horrific destruction...

King Nicholas Rostov vows to protect his beloved country from both Napoleon's troops and the Brotherhood, a band of terrorists threatening his borders. When the mysterious slave, Sera, saves him from an assassination attempt, Nicholas brings her home with him, ostensibly to protect her. Little does Nicholas know that Sera is a princess in disguise. On the run from Anatole Galerien, who is determined to kill her, she is on a desperate quest to retrieve the stolen Heart of Fire, the magnificent ruby that hides her magical kingdom from the outside world. Now, a pampered prisoner in Nicholas's castle, Sera feels her magical powers growing at an alarming rate. Without her grandfather's help, she must learn to understand and control them before she shakes the very foundations of Nicholas's castle. In this frightening land of strangers, war looms and danger lurks everywhere. As Sera struggles to keep her secrets, find the ruby, and master the magic inside her, she instinctively turns to the compelling captor who overwhelms her with his strength and confounds her with his comfort. But what good can come from loving an outlander when her very survival depends upon her fleeing this brutal world and returning home? Mary Lennox grew up dreaming of places where magic and happy endings co-existed. She woke up long enough to leave graduate school, marry an irreverent lawyer, and tour the world. Nothing could have prepared her for the medieval beauty of Europe's cathedrals, the grimness and glory of Russia, the exotic mysteries of India. Now back to dreaming full time, Mary spends her days creating worlds where magic and human endeavor vanquish evil and a happy ending is guaranteed.

From the author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Small Great Things and My Sister's Keeper, a novel exploring the story of a young woman overcome by the demands of having a family. Paige has only a few vivid memories of her mother, who abandoned her at five years old. Now, having left her father behind in Chicago for dreams of art school and marriage to an ambitious young doctor, she finds herself with a child of her own. But her mother's absence and shameful memories of her past force her to doubt whether she could ever be capable of bringing joy and meaning into the life of her child, gifts her own mother never gave. Harvesting the Heart is written with astonishing clarity and evocative detail, convincing in its depiction of emotional pain, love, and vulnerability, and recalls the writing of Alice Hoffman and Kristin Hannah. Out of Paige's struggle to find wholeness, Jodi Picoult crafts an absorbing novel peopled by richly drawn characters, and explores motherhood with a power and depth only she is capable of. “A brilliant, moving examination of motherhood, brimming with detail and emotion.” —Richmond Times-Dispatch “Jodi Picoult explores the fragile ground of ambivalent motherhood in her lush second novel. This story belongs to… the lucky reader.” —The New York Times Book Review

And the man she once adored with all her heart has just been appointed guardian of her son, the heir to Lochaene. Book Short Summary:

The Right Ventricle in Health and Disease provides a comprehensive and up-to-date database and collection of the available information which describes the structure and function of the normal right ventricle. The right ventricular performance and function reserve has now finally moved to the center of the stage as clinicians recognize that the drugs presently used to treat patients with severe pulmonary hypertension do not necessarily improve the performance of the right ventricle and because the survival depends on the right ventricular function that treatment strategies need to be developed to primarily protect the right ventricle from failing. In-depth chapters discuss right heart function and failure in patients with congenital heart diseases, review modern imaging techniques used to describe right ventricular form and function in patients with right heart failure (including cardiac MRI and PET scanning), describe ventricular interdependence: the left ventricle in pulmonary hypertension and discuss the concept of the sick lung circulation and its contribution to right heart failure. Treatment strategies of chronic right heart failure including drugs and mechanical devices are also discussed.

Book Short Summary:

This collection brings together seventeen of Kipling's early stories, written between 1885 and 1888, when Kipling was working as a journalist in India. Wry comedies of British officialdom alternate with glimpses into the harsh lives of the common soldiers and the Indian poor, revealing Kipling's legendary powers of observation and, in 'Baa Baa, Black Sheep' his own miserable childhood. From Mrs Hauksbee's Simla drawing-room to Mulvaney's cot in barracks, to the wild hills of Kafiristan, Kipling re-creates the India he knew in stories by turns ironic and sentimental, compassionate and bitter, displaying the brilliance that has captivated readers for over a century. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Short Summary:

An American woman plays a redeeming role amidst America's duplicity and betrayal of the Philippine struggle for independence during the revolution against Spain, which culminated in the Spanish-American and Philippine American wars. The fiction/nonfiction novel highlights the military and romantic exploits of the dashing and legendary hero, 23-year old General Gregorio Del Pilar, then the youngest in the Philippine army and American Christine Kelcher's intimate relationship with him and her allegiance to his country. Aide-de-camp to Philippine president Emilio Aguinaldo in exile in Hong Kong, the young general was euphoric over the coming of the Americans, espousing to his president acceptance of their offer of help in liberating Manila from the Spanish. When Commodore George Dewey and General Wesley Merritt betrayed the insurgency in a secret agreement with the Spanish to wage a mock battle to liberate the city to the exclusion of the insurgents "to protect the pride and honor of Spain," the general vowed to protect the president from capture, "or else the Republic dies." Military maneuvers by Major Peyton March and Colonel Charles Gilbert and their well-armed and well-trained soldiers are matched by surprise maneuvers by the insurgent general, making his last stand in Tirad Pass with 60 soldiers against 600 Texas Volunteers of the 33rd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Expeditionary Force. The president avoided capture for 11 months more after the battle.
