Book Excerpt :

When writing I lean towards subjects such as dreams, aspirations, peace, Mother Nature, death and what happens to us as we pass from this to the next phase of our lives. There’s plenty of different writings in this book so please make the most of this pick ‘n’ mix. If you enjoy these stories, it would help me if you spread the word to friends and family. Some stories may have you laughing and others might bring a tear to your eye - both emotions are valid and there are few things better than a right good belly laugh or an uncontrollable crying session to let all that tension out. Each week I write poetry, short stories, or the odd piece of flash fiction and post it on my Facebook page or my Storyteller website. Inspiration can come to me from anywhere and does so, making my mind’s eye work overtime. It only takes me to be sitting in a cafe when a waitress drops a tray and my mind is off and running. Has she some illness? Were the plates too hot? Did a sniper’s bullet hit her or did some unseen spirit from the dark side claw the tray from her hands? That’s what I mean about fertile imagination. I hope you enjoy this compilation. Grahame Anderson - Storyteller

Book Short Summary:

Lord Byron remains, as he was to many of his contemporaries, the defining personality of his age and time, the quintessential late-Romantic: one whose life matched the freedom of imagination and possibility of his poetry, charismatic, irresistible and shocking. The full range of his work, however, reveals a less straightforward and less stereotypical writer than this: a thinker as well as a feeler, a poet rather than merely a sensationalist, someone who justifies his towering literary reputation as much as his scandalous one. This edition of the Works contains Byron's entire poetical output, including dramas and material omitted or censored from early editions. It also presents around half of the known letters, the journals and other prose writings. The contents of the volumes are: Volume 1 (386 pp.): Introduction to the poetical works by Dr. Peter Cochran; Fugitive Pieces; Poems on Various Occasions; Hours of Idleness; Poems Original and Translated; other early poems; English Bards, and Scotch Reviewers; Hints from Horace; The Curse of Minerva; The Waltz. Volume 2 (295 pp.): Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, including stanzas excluded from the early editions and all Byron's and Hobhouse's notes and appendices. Volume 3 (426 pp.): Poems 1809–1813; The Giaour; The Bride of Abydos; The Corsair; Lara; Hebrew Melodies; Poems 1814–1816; The Siege of Corinth; Parisina; Poems of the Separation. Volume 4 (509 pp.): The Prisoner of Chillon; Poems of July–September, 1816; Manfred; The Lament of Tasso; Beppo; Ode on Venice; Mazeppa; The Prophecy of Dante; The Morgante Maggiore; Francesca of Rimini; Marino Faliero; The Vision of Judgment; Poems 1816–1823; The Blues. Volume 5 (685 pp.): Sardanapalus; The Two Foscari; Cain; Heaven and Earth; Werner; The Deformed Transformed; The Age of Bronze; The Island. Volume 6 (689 pp.): Don Juan. Volume 7 (87 pp.): minor poems and jeux d'esprit. Volume 8 (204 pp.): Introduction to the prose works by Dr. Peter Cochran; letters, to August 1811. Volume 9 (352 pp.): letters, August 1811 to December 1813; journal, November 1813 to April 1814; articles from the Monthly Review; Parliamentary speeches. Volume 10 (266 pp.): letters, January 1814 to November 1816; journal for Augusta, September 1816; a fragment of a novel. Volume 11 (355 pp.): letters, November 1816 to March 1820; translations from Armenian; unfinished skit on Sotheby's Tour; letter to the editor of "My Grandmother's Review"; reply to Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. Volume 12 (358 pp.): letters, April 1820 to December 1821; extracts from journal, January to February 1821; "My Dictionary"; Detached Thoughts; the two letters on Bowles and Pope; draft of an address to the Neapolitan insurgents; notes on Bacon's apophthegms and Voltaire. Volume 13 (261 pp.): letters, January 1822 on; two late prose fragments; additional letters; undated letters to Lady Melbourne. All of the Works have been newly typeset for this edition. The basis of the texts is Ernest Hartley Coleridge's edition of the poetry and Rowland E. Prothero's edition of the prose (as published uniformly, London: John Murray, 1898). Further letters have been added from the texts in John Murray, ed., Lord Byron's Correspondence (London: John Murray, 1922, 2 vols.), Ralph, Earl of Lovelace, Astarte (London: Scribner's, 1921), and material supplied by Peter Cochran drawing on the B.L. Loan 70 collection and other sources, and incorporated silently into the chronological sequence and numbering of the series. Additional poems and portions of Childe Harold initially suppressed have been supplied from the online edition by Peter Cochran (www.internationalbyronsociety.org) and incorporated into the sequence.

Book Short Summary:

We'll go asleep is a second English-language poetry volume in author's rich and varied oeuvre. It futures 31 poems and ballads with 4 micro-essays supplementing some of works. All is illustrated with black & white photographs taken by author. In conclusion, the leitmotif of the piece is a life itself with all its favors and disapprovals.Although it has to be admitted that the book is kept in a rather dark mood, however, this fact does not affect the quality of the so-called Licentia petica, on the contrary, it serves its purpose by giving the volume a unique character.

Book Short Summary:

Poetry and short stories can act as powerful springboards to growth, self-enhancement and healing. With the guidance of a skilled facilitator, participants can engage with their own creative expression, and with that of others, and in doing so find opportunities to voice their truth, affirm their strengths, and find new ways of coping with challenges. This book explores the therapeutic possibilities of poetry and stories in turn, describing how to select appropriate works for discussion, and providing techniques for facilitating personally-relevent and growth-enhancing sessions. The author provides ideas and suggestions for personal writing activities that emerge from or intertwine with this discussion, and explains how participants can create their own poetic and narrative pieces using non-literary stimuli, such as music, photographs, paintings, objects, and physical movement. A useful appendix contains titles of individual poems, stories, and literary anthologies that the author has found particularly beneficial in her work, as well as useful further resources and contact details for readers who would like to train to be registered or certified poetry therapists or facilitators. Combining theory with innovative ideas for practical, experiential exercises, this book is a valuable tool for creative arts therapy students and practitioners, mental health and medical professionals, and anyone else interested in the healing possibilities of creative expression.

Book Short Summary:

This book provides a translation of the complete poems and fu of Cao Zhi (192–232), one of China’s most famous poets. Cao Zhi lived during a tumultuous age, a time of intrepid figures and of bold and violent acts that have captured the Chinese imagination across the centuries. His father Cao Cao (155–220) became the most powerful leader in a divided empire, and on his death, Cao Zhi’s elder brother Cao Pi (187–226) engineered the abdication of the last Han emperor, establishing himself as the founding emperor of the Wei Dynasty (220–265). Although Cao Zhi wanted to play an active role in government and military matters, he was not allowed to do so, and he is remembered as a writer. The Poetry of Cao Zhi contains in its body one hundred twenty-eight pieces of poetry and fu. The extant editions of Cao Zhi’s writings differ in the number of pieces they contain and present many textual variants. The translations in this volume are based on a valuable edition of Cao’s works by Ding Yan (1794–1875), and are supplemented by robust annotations, a brief biography of Cao Zhi, and an introduction to the poetry by the translator.

Book Short Summary:

In the near future, a woman named Lucinda enters a supermarket. Once inside, she realizes three things: first, the supermarket is big, preposterously, surreally big; second, there is no apparent way to check out; third, the produce department is selling human babies, extra-large genetically-manipulated newborns into which the store has downloaded—as an extra customer service feature—basic information about the world, enabling just-purchased tykes to walk and talk. But Lucinda's new baby is not sweet and cuddly; he's rude and snarky, refusing to play nice until she can prove to him growing up will be worth the effort. While Lucinda is attempting to return the brat to customer service, he escapes the shopping cart and determines to explore the vast store on his own and find the meaning of life. Is true wisdom to be found in Canned Goods? How about Frozen Foods? And who is the man with the sword? Why is he covered in blood? James W. Morris is a graduate of LaSalle University in Philadelphia, where he was awarded a scholarship for creative writing. He has published dozens of short stories, humor pieces, essays, and poems in various literary magazines, including PHILADELPHIA STORIES and ZAHIR, and worked for a time as a joke writer for Jay Leno. Book Short Summary:

The canon of classical Greek and Latin poetry is built around big names, with Homer and Virgil at the center, but many ancient poems survive without a firm ascription to a known author. This negative category, anonymity, ties together texts as different as, for instance, the orally derived Homeric Hymns and the learned interpolation that is the Helen episode in Aeneid 2, but they all have in common that they have been maltreated in various ways, consciously or through neglect, by generations of readers and scholars, ancient as well as modern. These accumulated layers of obliteration, which can manifest, for instance, in textual distortions or aesthetic condemnation, make it all but impossible to access anonymous poems in their pristine shape and context. The essays collected in this volume attempt, each in its own way, to disentangle the bundles of historically accreted uncertainties and misconceptions that affect individual anonymous texts, including pseudepigrapha ascribed to Homer, Manetho, Virgil, and Tibullus, literary and inscribed epigrams, and unattributed fragments. Poems without Poets will be of interest to students and scholars working on any anonymous ancient texts, but also to readers seeking an introduction to classical poetry beyond the limits of the established canon.

Book Short Summary:

KIRKUS REVIEW These collected poems trace a soldier’s lifetime journey and his experiences of peace and war. O’Meara has written both fiction and nonfiction. This is his first book of poetry, arranged in roughly chronological order from childhood and adolescence to young manhood during the Vietnam War era and reflective later years. Besides movement along a timeline, the poems also track the speaker’s path to self-understanding, as mapped in the opening piece, “Starting Out.” This is a concrete poem whose diamond shape echoes the speaker’s ballooning self-importance —his “place in the history / of things”—that then narrows to a wiser humility: “Surprise, it was / never ’bout / me.” O’Meara’s voice is flexible, sometimes solemn, sometimes casual, as in “Michael,” set in the midst of the Vietnam War: “When I came back / Michael had been dead six months. / There were bands / playin’ in Central Park; / Jesus freaks were lovin’, / all the world was carin’.” The bright scene, the lines’ musical lilt, and the speaker’s slangy voice make a powerful ironic contrast with the poem’s bitter reflections, nicely capturing the speaker’s feelings of loss and anomie. Overall, the poems emphasize the pathos behind even the best memories, because their reality fades: “ ’Course all them ghosts, / the moms ’n dads, / the kids ’n friends, / they wander off.” On some occasions the poems can become sentimental, as in “For a Soldier”: “Remember him, / For, if he could, / His gaze would reach across the shores / And melt into your heart.” This idealized figure bears little relationship to the more authentic, badly frightened young soldier in “Nuts,” “who said / Cuttin’ ears... / was the way to go.” Intriguing poems about history and a warrior’s trajectory with a strong sense of pathos.

Mantz & J. Middleton Murry Kathleen Mansfield Murry (1888–1923) was a prominent New Zealand modernist short story writer who was born and brought up in colonial New Zealand and wrote under the pen name of Katherine Mansfield. At 19, Mansfield left New Zealand and settled in the United Kingdom, where she became a friend of modernist writers such as D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf. Like Woolf, Mansfield was also interested in the feelings and thoughts of her characters rather than plot development and hence her short stories show the complexities of a character's interior life in all its various shades.

Book Short Summary:

This is a representative collection of the writings of a neglected Canadian author, William Wilfred Campbell (1858-1918). Among the 112 poems in William Wilfred Campbell: Selected Poetry and Essays are the familiar “Indian Summer” and “How One Winter Came in the Lake Region,” along with many less well-known love poems, patriotic songs, and occasional poems. Some twenty manuscript pieces are published here for the first time. The notorious “Mermaid Inn” essay in which Campbell refers to the mythical nature of the cross is included, and so is the letter of self-justification that Campbell wrote—but never sent—to the editor of the Globe. Here, too, are speeches, essays published in The Week and the Ottawa Evening Journal, and significant sections from Campbells unfinished treatise on evolution, “The Tragedy of Man.” By the time Campbell died on New Year’s Day 1918, shifting values had begun to turn critical opinion against his work. Now William Wilfred Campbell: Selected Poetry and Essays will enable Canadians to appreciate Campbells art and to recognize his place in the development of Canadian thought.
